Travel Photography for Beginners - Stefan Lenz
About the author
Travel photographer Stefan Lenz discovered his love for travel in 2010. In the following eight years he visited a total of 52 countries on four continents. In 2016 he started travelling alone and focused more and more on his second big passion: photography. In the meantime, his photos regularly inspire several thousand followers on Instagram. In 2017, he launched his own blog on the topics of travel
and photography
. His most successful articles to date made it into the top 3 of the German trending charts on the Steemit
blogging platform. In 2018, Stefan decided to publish his knowledge and experience in the field of travel photography in form of a guidebook. His goal is to inspire his readers and show them how they can bring their own travel shots to a high photographic level with as little effort as possible and without expensive professional equipment.
Introduction
What is travel photography actually? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Maybe the question even seems a bit strange to you, after all, travel photography is at least familiar to almost everyone. But let me explain to you why this is a very special form of photography. We only have to make a short comparison. For example, what does a landscape photographer do? He photographs landscapes. What does an architectural photographer do? He photographs architecture. A product photographer photographs products, a portrait photographer photographs people - so we could continue this list for much longer. But what does a travel photographer? He photographs travel? No, of course you can't take a picture of a trip. After all, a journey is not a photo subject, but an experience. You realize that travel photography can hardly be equated with other areas of photography according to this system. Rather, a travel photographer must cover numerous individual areas of photography. Think for yourself how diverse the things you photograph while travelling are. During a city trip, you take pictures of architecture and streets. In nature you cover the areas of landscape, animal and plant photography. Every time you take pictures of your fellow travelers, you become a portrait photographer and as soon as the sun goes down, you suddenly become a night photographer. You see, as a travel photographer you have to be one thing above everything else: an all-rounder! And that brings us to a point that many people don't understand properly and therefore make the wrong decisions from the very beginning, which in turn can mean that the joy of travel photography gets lost very quickly.

My philosophy of travel photography
So what is a travel photographer? Is that someone who travels to take pictures? Or is it someone who likes to travel and documents his journey photographically? If you ask me, it's difficult to give a general answer to this question, but I would like to give you my personal view of it.
