Brigitte heard the disconnection of the line and the urge to smash the handset of the phone down into its cradle flitted through her mind. Her hand hovered in the air for a split second as she came close to giving in to the impulse before she forced herself to resist it. She let out a long, slow breath to try and calm herself as she put the phone down then slumped back in the seat.

Shit…, shit, she cursed and put her hands over her eyes when she rocked her head back.

She stayed like that for a short while before lowering her hands and swiveling the chair around to look out the conference room window. There were only a few lights shining in the windows of the office block on the opposite of the street and it was testament to how late in the day it was. It made her look at her watch and she grimaced when she saw it was now after nine. She didn’t realize she’d waited around so long for the call and suddenly wished she hadn’t bothered.

Being informed by the client that they’d decided to go with another law firm on this occasion wasn’t what she’d wanted to hear and she knew her boss would be pissed about it when he found out. She could just about live with that. Of more concern to her was that the incentive of becoming a partner of the firm had been dangled in front of her, but only if she managed to successfully negotiate the deal.

The phone call she just took meant that ship had sailed. She was determined to get to partner, but a chance passing her by was an annoyance and the frustration of that, as well as missing out on the contract itself, welled up.

Fuck, she cursed under her breath as she put her hands over her eyes again.

It was the way she was sitting when she heard the sound of someone entering the conference room and the voice startled her slightly.

Brigitte dropped her hands away from her face as she spun the seat around to the sight of Kyle. The expression on the young intern’s face was nervous and she knew why.

No, she snapped and saw his face screw up. I spoke to the client a few minutes ago and they’re going with someone else, so we missed out.

It didn’t help, Brigitte cut in a little more harshly than she intended, but the sight of the intern did nothing to lessen her frustrations.
