Isaac saw the way Natalie hurriedly dropped her hand away from in front of her face when he walked in the bedroom. It brought on a hint of suspicion, but his girlfriend’s demeanor remained calm as she reached out to set down the phone she was holding on the table beside the bed.

Not had your shower yet? he asked.

I’m just about to, she told him and looked at the clock on the wall. I’m meeting Irene at eight, so I have time.

OK, he replied as he walked across to the table to pick up a pack of cigarillos.

The phone had been placed screen down, so he couldn’t see what was on it. That only increased his misgivings as he stared at the table.

Grabbing for the phone, he lifted it and swiped a finger on the dark screen to light it up. His jaw dropped when he saw what was on it and he began to shake.

He’d never used Tinder in his life, but he was aware of what it was. That the app was on his girlfriend’s phone came as a shock, as did the picture of the man he found himself staring at. He lifted a hand to brush his fingertips on his forehead as cold sweat prickled on his skin. The idea that Natalie might be cheating on him was way more than a suspicion now. The flare of anger came on, but he was unsure of what to do.

Confront her, he muttered, but his desire to do that evaporated when he heard the sound of movement from within the bathroom.

It made him set the phone down the way he found it on the table and quickly move across the room. A glance to the bathroom door showed it hadn’t opened and he walked out to the hallway.

Bloody coward, he berated himself and shook his head as he hurried along towards the kitchen.

Natalie was the best thing that ever happened to him. At least, she was when they met the year before.
