Woman Rise - Woman Rise Movement

    Willing

    By Stacey Rae

The mountains we climb in our lives that pull at the very seams of who we are, are also the openings when our soul speaks to us the loudest. If we are willing to listen.

    — Stacey Rae

The bustling sound of the Bangkok restaurant drowned out the jarring anger swirling in my twelve-year-old mind as I watched my parents trying to discreetly argue at the dinner table. My father had just arrived home from another one of his long periods of work away and my family was feeling the effects of his reoccurring travel schedule.

No one was eating their dinner and as my mother’s plea for change left her lips, time seemed to stand still for too many moments to count as I sank more into my chair, longing to disappear into the floor. Things were about to change but what did this all mean? The questions flooded my mind as I looked to sort and understand what was inevitably happening before my eyes.

Our family life, while contained in a warm, beautiful home with brand name clothes, elaborate trips around the world, and all my physical needs met, had been empty of emotional support and honest conversations. I was a young girl, unsure and clumsy in my attempts at navigating my inner landscapes, certainly assuming that my abstract feelings were normal, and yet I never heard mention of them outside the walls of my own mind.

From the outside, my life held an impression of extraordinary, Bangkok being one of the many places we had called home over the years of my father’s work in the oil industry. We were often swimming in tropical oceans, teal pools, or visiting monumental sites around the world. Tonight though, the foundation was shaken beneath our beautiful lifestyle and the unspoken concerns and turmoil between our family unit pierced the usual mundane dinner conversation.

I waited and watched silently, trying to seem unaware of the awkwardness brewing at our table. I pushed my now cold fettuccine around my plate, ruminating in the little understanding I had as the two decisions that would undoubtedly change the trajectory of my life, collided. The shattering of my parents’ marriage, one that would involve a sudden move to the other side of the world with little to no explanation, and another decision which I would have way more control over, was being woven within me that night. One that had been rising in me for months, ringing in my ears with each moment of witnessing the unfolding of my father’s focus on work and family, and how these two areas of his life were prioritized. This decision, unknown to me at the time, would land me on a path that would serve me, shake me, teach me and eventually drop me right in the lap of my soul
