    About Author

    Chapter One

One morning around the end of June, the morning light was shining through the window of room fourteen of the Sundown Motel. Twenty-four-year old, Derek Shepherd was getting ready for work. He laid on the bed with his brown hair a mess and only wearing a pair of blue boxers on his hundred-fifty-pound body.

He had stayed up late watching some old movie that he had already seen a hundred times. He regretted his decision. Staying up late had become a problem of his since he had lost his job and apartment a month ago.

Derek had a job framing houses. He liked what he had been doing because it was outside work. He had gotten into an argument with his boss one day and got fired. He had been upset that his boss hadn’t paid him for two weeks.

Rob Smith, Derek’s old boss, said that he didn’t have the money to pay anyone. Derek got upset when Rob told him that. His rent was due and the check would have covered the rent. He didn’t confront Rob at first, because he didn’t know what to do if there was anything, he could do about it.

He had waited patiently for his money for the first week that he was owed. His landlord, Mr. Ross, wasn’t a nice fellow at all. Mr. Ross had already tried to evict him twice before. He really wanted to keep his one bedroom apart. He had called it home for two years.

One Monday morning, Derek had gone into work in a bad mood. He had demanded his money from Rob, his old boss.

Rob, was a big man and wasn’t intimated by Derek. He just laughed at Derek. Then Derek had gotten upset.

Derek started yelling and call Rob some bad names. He was only making his situation worse. Rob had just kept laughing at him. Derek was made to leave the job site. He never saw the money that Rob owed him.

Derek’s mom was paying for the motel room and his food. She was a nice lady and didn’t get mad too easily. She was getting tired of how he was handling his life. She had made it clear that she didn’t like the way that he handled the situation with his old boss.

She kept on him about finding a dependable job. Construction sometimes depended too much on the weather. She was always reminding him that she could keep paying the hundred-and-sixty dollars a week for the motel room.

After staying up late and sleeping until whenever he wanted every morning, he was struggling to get out of bed. He had set his alarm for seven in the morning. He ended up hitting the snooze button till seven-thirty. There was only thirty minutes to get ready for his new job. He was not motivated to be in any kind of hurry.

I don’t want to get up, Derek said.

He rubbed his head with his hand. He could tell that his short brown hair was a mess and probably sticking up in spots. He had been meaning to shave his face and head, but hadn’t gotten around to it. He liked to keep his hair short and face clean shaven. He didn’t have time to do any of that, but he had to do something with his hair.

He planned on wearing a black pair of jeans and tee shirt. The same clothes he had worn the night before. He figured he would save time that way. He hadn’t done his laundry for a week.

The bed seemed not to want to let him go. He knew that he had to get back into the work routine. He always did have a problem with being late.

He eventually got up out of bed and sat down at the table. There was a small round table with two chairs not far from the bed. The room had a small refrigerator, microwave, desk, and a dresser with a television on top. There was also a small bathroom. The walls were a cream color that was trimmed out with a pink flower design. He appreciated the air conditioner because it had been getting hot.

It didn’t matter what time that he got up. He always started his day at the table. There was a morning routine and he stuck with it.

The routine was simple and always that the same. It started off with the first cigarette of the day at the table. Then it was to the bathroom to take a piss. Then back to the table for another cigarette. Finally, back
