"What you do in front of people is nothing if you are not living the same life at home behind closed doors." Joyce Meyer

Upon arriving at Augustine Prep, thirty-three year old Brianna Madison stopped by the teacher’s lounge and made her morning cup of strong black coffee before heading up the hall to her seventh grade classroom. This was her first year teaching for the upscale private co-ed school in Germantown. It was a blessing the first lady of the church Brianna faithfully attended told Brianna about the teaching position. It was right on time too, since Brianna recently returned to Memphis just over a year ago, having relocated from Dallas-Fort Worth.

The position paid a good salary, far more than Memphis Shelby County school system. Everything about Augustine Prep, from the fine-dining style cafeteria to the modern architectural design of the buildings—everything about Augustine Prep shouted money, big money!

Entering her classroom and closing the door behind her, Brianna approached her desk, and placed her handbag and mug of coffee on it. It was seven ten a.m.—twenty-five minutes before her first group of students would come dragging into her room.

She picked up her mug, took a sip of the hot cup of caffeine, and went over to the third floor window. Eyeing the students below as their wealthy parents, drivers, and some of them drove into the parking lot in their fancy cars, was quite amusing and a little irritating.

Growing up, it wasn’t like Brianna lived in the poorest part of town. However, her youth was nothing like any of these kids. The family financial stats of most of the students of Augustine Prep ranged from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars—a long way from her middle class family life.

Brianna’s father was a smart man who invested his dollars well. His salary as a supervisor for a large auto firm, afforded Brianna and her sister a comfortable lifestyle, combined with their mother’s income as a paralegal.

A tap on her classroom door startled Brianna. Good morning, pretty lady, the man said, entering Brianna’s classroom.

Good morning, Trey. I can’t believe you’re already present and accounted for.

Had no choice. I’m not one to lose a bet.

Oh, I see. So that’s why you’re showing your face, huh?

Most definitely. I don’t want to lose the chance to take you to dinner.

Brianna laughed. I can’t believe the bet is for you to be on time and in your classroom at least fifteen minutes before your students or—

Or else, I’ll have to resign myself to missing out on the pleasure of your company.

How did I agree to that? She took another sip of her now almost lukewarm coffee, moved away from the window, and placed the cup back on her desk. Folding her arms, she took a stance back, smiled, and shook her head. You really are a piece of work.

I’ve been called worse. So, how much longer are you going to torture me? Are you seriously going to make me get to work early for the remainder of the month?

Yep, sure am. And I don’t feel bad about it either. And uh, plus the end of the month is in only three days away, silly. Brianna grinned and shook her head.

Trey feigned a smirk on his face before resuming the conversation. Okay, have it your way. But be prepared Friday night, seven o’clock. I’m going to show you the time of your life.

That is—if you win. She turned away from him swiftly and went to her desk. Opening her side desk drawer, she removed her laptop and pushed the power button.

    I guess that’s my cue.

No, stay as long as you like. But here’s a hint. Just because you’re at school doesn’t mean you’re in your classroom.

Trey looked at his phone and then rushed toward the door. Gotta go. See you later. I have uh, three minutes to get to my classroom.

Yeah, which is uh, only right across the hall. Brianna laughed. Bye, Trey. I’ll talk to you later.

Have a good one. I’ll stop by later to see what you’re up to.

    Sure.

Brianna smiled as Trey closed the door. She leaned back in her chair and watched him as he sauntered across the hall. He was fine as heck, divorced, and like her, he had no kids. If only Brianna was interested in a relationship. If she had been, it would have been with a man like Trey, but she was cautious about becoming involved with anyone. She had secrets, past traumas, far too many disappointments, and heartbreaks in her life. If only things had been different then she could have—would have, chosen differently. Now here she was, back in Memphis, a city she once called home but said she would never return to. Here in Memphis, she was living a recycled new lie and life, wearing an even broader smiling face on display for the world—but alone she cried the tears of a clown.

"The big ‘aha’ moment is that the trauma never goes away." Viola Davis

Until age five, Brianna lived in an orphanage in Haiti. She did not know her biological parents.

The living condition of the orphanage was appalling. There were days upon days when Brianna and the other orphans barely had scraps to eat, and the water was often the color of the darkest night.

A massive earthquake in Haiti when Brianna was four years old, buried the little girl underneath heavy mud, dirt, and concrete rubble. Rescue workers discovered Brianna and two other children days after the earthquake. It was only by God’s grace she made it through that ordeal alive. The girl and boy found next to Brianna were orphans the same as Brianna. The three of them often begged on the streets together.

The little girl and boy weren’t as fortunate as Brianna—they died next to her. Brianna heard them take their last breaths. She inhaled the constant stench of death from their decaying bodies. She may have been only four years old at the time, but Brianna knew even then, this would be something that would haunt her forever.

Healthcare was already poor before the earthquake. After the quake, it was practically nonexistent. Meaning, Brianna received little if any medical care for the severe injuries she sustained. The rubble weighing on top of the lower half of her body for all of those
