It’s only the third night of our vacation and it’s the third night my so-called husband has managed to get so drunk that I’m gonna carry him back to the room. Fan-goddamn-tastic.

My husband Carl is over at the far side of the bar right now, leaning against a wall and slurring his speech while talking to some young skank in a tight dress. His gut hangs out the bottom of his shirt. Beer slops around the glass as he gestures, occasionally spilling from the sides. I knock back the last of my drink and hand him the glass with a grateful smile.

‘May as well,’ I say. ‘I guess we’ll be here until my husband strikes out with every girl in the bar.’

The bartender glances along the bar.
