    Chapter 1

    June 2019

Landon Williams couldn’t believe who was sitting in his office waiting to see him.

    Kat Simmons.

He wasn’t sure how to feel. He had met her through his best friend, Jett Blackstone. Jett was engaged to Kat’s half-sister, Jazz Quinn. The woman had a hold on him; she just wouldn’t take a chance on a relationship. He was trying to move forward, but it just wasn’t working out.

Kat, what are you doing here? Landon asked.

Kat looked up at him with the big blue eyes and a donut stuffed in her mouth.

He laughed out loud, What the hell, Kat? It must be serious if you’re shoving Barbara’s double chocolate donuts in your mouth like that.

She looked at him, her eyes welling up with tears, Mmhpf...

Landon sat next to her and he opened his arms, offering her the hug that she so obviously needed. She came willingly to him without so much as a stiff arm. He knew it must have been serious for her to come to him and to let him hold her.

    ***

Kat was in trouble, and it had nothing to do with the man holding her right now. Even though he felt so much like home. Landon smelled like the outdoors, a mixture of the ocean and woods. She assumed it was from his years as a Navy Seal. Even today he looked like he was wearing his dress blues. He was dressed in black slacks with a white button-up shirt. He must have had a tie on at one time because the shirt was loosened just at the top. She knew he was trouble with her heart, but at this moment he was the only one she could trust with what she had witnessed. She had stopped at Sweet Land of Liberty. Barbara would have a double chocolate donut secret stash that she kept hidden for stressful situations like this one for Kat.

I think I’m in trouble Landon. I need your help, Kat said. She leaned back from the hug that Landon had given her.

He dropped his arms at that very moment and she instantly missed the safety net he had offered. He was the real deal handsome, honest and super sexy.

What happened, Kat? This isn't like you to come looking for help...especially from me, he said as he moved away from her frowning.

Kat was a little taken back by his attitude. She knew that they hadn’t ended on good terms, but she thought he cared for her.

I’ve no one else to turn to and I’m not sure what to do, she said as she licked her lips.

    What happened? Landon asked.

My boss has disappeared. He owes a whole bunch of money to some loan sharks, Kat answered.

What about going to the police station? Landon asked.

Kat sat there with her arms crossed her chest, I can’t go; they threatened Jazz. Kat then shoved another double chocolate donut into her mouth.

    Chapter 2

Landon wasn’t sure what to say.

She sat there eating her favorite flavor donut looking like Betty Boop with blonde hair. She had her hair pulled up into a messy bun. It was tied up with a scarf-looking thing and she was wearing her favorite jeans with black biker boots and a sweatshirt that belonged to him. It must have been one that he left at her apartment. The shocking thing was that he knew she didn’t get how gorgeous she was or how incredibly challenging her independence could be.

Why are you here? You should be at the police station telling them what happened, Landon said.

Lan, you don’t get it...they knew everything about Jazz, she explained, shoving another donut in her mouth

Where the hell is your dick head of a boss? he knew that was the nickname she had given him. One thing about Kat was that she used curse words as adjectives, and it was one of the things that made it hard to get close to her. She used it as a shield to keep people at arm’s length.

The phone rang, he walked over to his desk, and lifted his finger to indicate to hold on for a moment.

Hello, this is Landon Williams. He listened to the voice on the other end of the line. Hey, Scarlet, how are you? Landon shifted around so he didn’t have to look at Kat.

I’m going to have to reschedule...a family situation came up. Yeah, I was looking forward to this evening too. Ok, I’ll call you when this family thing gets sorted out.

He hung up the phone and turned back to Kat; if he didn’t know her so well, he would have missed the hurt on her face.

    ***

Kat shouldn’t have been shocked that he was dating. He was an amazing man. It just hurt more than she was willing to admit. She had no one to blame but herself, but she was scared to let him know about her illness.

Lan, I didn’t mean to interrupt your evening. I can get a hotel room; we can talk in the morning, she said and got up to leave.

Hold the fuck up. You came for my help, but you need to start from the beginning, he said, reaching out his hand for her to take. Without hesitation, she took it.

They both sat on the huge brown couch that Landon had in his office just in case he had a late night. Kat began rubbing the couch beneath her. It felt soft and almost took her mind off the nightmare she was in.

Kat started from the beginning, For the past two or three months, my dickhead boss has been acting secretive. He’s handled all the deliveries of medication himself, which is unusual. Part of my job is to verify all the amounts of medicine with the documents. Well, I received a phone call from the medical supplier, and it seems that Joe— he cut her off.

Who the hell is Joe? he asked.

Wh..at...? Kat said looking at him confused.

Joe, who the hell is Joe? Landon angrily ran his hand through his hair.

Joe is my dickhead boss. Will you please keep up? She handed him a donut.

Kat watched him take a bite looking at what a stunning man was sitting beside her. He was tall, about six foot two inches, with dark brown hair and amazing blue eyes. They were a
