About this ebook

Mandy is at her wits end at her company, Helping Hands Insurance. She needs a vacation, like—yesterday! So after telling her boss, what he can do with his “Helping Hands”, she’s more than eager to accept an invitation, from her childhood friends Nathan and Carter, to the Bucking Horse Ranch for some R&R.

Nathan and Cater know the guy that owns the Bucking Horse, and has given the trio a 2 week pass, all-expense paid. They convince her that horseback riding is therapeutic. She’s never been on horse since she was five, and that was the mechanical horse outside the neighborhood grocery store. But hey, she’s open to new things.

Nathan and Carter want Mandy to ride more than the horses. They’ve been childhood friends since grade school, and they want to get out of the “Best Bud” zone. They love her more than life itself. They’ve been through successes, failures, celebrations and tragedies.

But if they can’t get her on a horse, how the heck are they going to get her on them?

A story with a comedy of errors about a sweet loving friendship turning into something more.

    Chapter One

Thank you for calling Helping Hands Insurance, how can my hands help you?

My car got run over by a RV. It looks like a tin can!

Mandy McIntyre tried to imagine a squished car looking like a sardine can. Okay ma’am, may I have your name and your insurance policy number.

Yes. It’s Mrs. Greta Hubert, policy number A4581.

Mandy typed in the information in the computer…after removing the screen saver of tap-dancing cats.

    Beep!

Mandy scowled at the familiar error beep. Mrs. Hubert, could you give me the correct spelling of your full name and the policy number again.

The lady gave her all the info slowly. Then…

    Beep!

Hold on, let me check one more place. Mandy put the customer on hold and went into another screen.

The info went in correctly, however, she discovered the problem that caused the error beeps.

She got back on the phone with Mrs. Hubert. Ma’am, your insurance lapsed over one year ago.

I know, but I want to renew and cover this.

Mandy rolled her eyes. She could see it was going to be one of those days. She decided to ask a question that would get to the bottom of this and shut it down.

Mrs. Hubert, when did this accident occur.

    Six months ago.

Mandy buried her head in her hands. Why are you just reporting it now, and with an expired insurance policy?

I wasn’t using my car then. I want to use it now. So, can I renew and get this covered?

I’m sorry ma’am, but that is not possible, however I can review your last policy and maybe we can reinstate you, but it won’t cover a past accident, especially one that long ago, Mandy said, sweetly, while gritting her teeth.

But I have auto renew! It’s supposed to be still active!

That’s only if you keep paying through auto-pay. And it looks like we sent you three notices. The first stating that the first payment didn’t go through due to insufficient funds. That was last year. The second inquiring if you want to renew, and the third saying we have canceled you. There was a long pause, as Mandy stared at the screen with all the information she just conveyed to Mrs. Hubert.

But I didn’t want to use my car then, I used my son’s. Can’t you do a retro policy thing, dating back then?

    No ma’am. Silence again.

Let me speak to your supervisor. I’ve paid too much money into this company to get this kind of treatment!

You know what? Hang on! Click! Mandy hung up on her.

Carol, take over, I need a break.

Mandy slammed down her headphones and stormed off in the direction of the staff kitchen.

Crazy bitch asking for stuff, after not paying her insurance for a year, then her old hooptie got squished over six months ago; an old 1995 Toyota! Mandy said, to no one in particular, as she stormed off the call center floor.

Girl, you’re having a day like I had all last week, Sara said, sitting at one of the tables, drinking a soda.

First it was Mr. Lambert that had a policy for flood insurance, but he failed to mark plumbing issues. He tried to fix something on his own and flooded his whole house and the neighbor’s. Mandy sat down next to Sara.

That’s nothing, Sara said, waving her hand at her. How about the one I had last Friday. Bought three rattle snakes for some case he was studying in veterinarian school and wondered why he couldn’t get insured for snake bites. Really?

Some of these customers need to go to school, to find out how insurance companies work, Mandy said.

Then no one would buy a policy, came a voice from the entrance. Mandy and Sara turned around, it was Hooper, another agent.

    That’s true, Mandy chuckled."

Sounds like someone needs a vacation, Hooper said, joining the girls.

Yeah, I’m way overdue, Mandy said, taking a sip of her coffee. The sound of her cell phone echoed in the huge staff kitchen. She looked to see who it was. Carter.

He was the other half of her best male buds duo. Nathan was the other one. She’s known them since grammar school. They’ve been through a lot together, more than any friends. She was lucky to have these two in her life.

Right now, they were in town after a long sales trip. They dealt in the vintage car business. Buying them at auction, fixing them up and selling them and exorbitant prices.

    She answered. Hello there.

    Hey, sweetie. How’s your morning?

    Want to start it over.

Uh-oh. Sounds like Helping Hands wants to slap someone. Carter chuckled.

You ain’t never lied. You and Nathan are still coming for lunch?

‘That’s why I called. Where do you want to go?"

I’m in the mood for cheap Chinese food.

Cheap Chinese food it is, see you at noon. He disconnected.

Sounds like you got a lunch date again, Sara said.

"Yeah, the guys are in town this month, so we’ve
