Part 1
My father was born in 1913, and he grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He went to grade school and high school there. When he turned 16 years old, he had to go through the great depression, and not very many people were working at that time.
Most of the people would line up for blocks to get a donut and a free cup of coffee. People would go for any job they could find, just to put food on the table. My father was one of the lucky ones, and he was able to go to College. He received his doctorate in the theater and drama department. When he was around 26 years old, he got drafted to the United States Navy. It was WW2, and they put him in charge of sending and receiving messages from one ship to another. He was responsible for decoding signals from the enemy. After the war ended in 1945, my father returned to Chicago to look for work and find a place to live. That is when he met his future wife. He met her on a golf course, and he found out that she was a nurse. It was love at first sight. After dating for some time, they decided to get married; then he was offered a teaching job working for a University. He was going to have to move to a small town in New Mexico. They wanted him to teach in the theater department. He decided to accept the job, and they both decided to move to New Mexico. After he started working at the University, and he became a big success. People from all over the area would travel to see his plays. Even some movie stars drove down to participate. He wasn’t home that much, because there was a lot of work involved putting it together. He took his work very seriously. My mother was offered a job at the high school as a teacher. They also wanted her to be the school nurse. She accepted the job and was very happy. Everyone fell in love with her, not only was she attractive, but she was also very kind. She cared about everyone. She loved working with teenagers, and everyone got along with her, as well.
Starting School
One year later, my father found out that he was going to have a son, and he was excited. They decided to name him Billy. Then about five years later, I was born, and they decided to call me Robert. My brother and I lived with my parents in a small house in a small town. We lived in a purple house. When I was six years old, I started school. The school was about three blocks away from my home. On my first day, I met a friend, and his name was Timmy. He lived just across the street from the school. Timmy asked me if I would like to come over to his house after school. I asked my mother if it would be ok if I could go over to his house for a little while to play. She said that it would be fine, but make sure that you don’t stay too long. I had a lot of fun over at Timmy’s house. Every day I would go over to his house, and we would watch Gilligan Island. A couple of weeks later, there was a new kid in our class at school. His name was Eric, and he was different than other kids. Eric was bigger and stronger than most children. When we went out to play for reses, I asked Eric ‘If he would like to play on the swing sets’? He said, ok, I would like that. Eric said, I don’t have very many friends here because I just moved here.
I told him that I would be his friend. From that moment on, we were always together.
Every Friday, the School would sell popcorn and lemons with candy canes stuck inside of them. It only cost a dime to buy one of them, and they both tasted delicious. A couple of weeks had gone by, and we found out that everyone in the School had to get shots. So, they had all the boys and girls line up in the hallway, and everyone received a shot in the arm, one by one. It was a terrifying time for a lot of kids. When I got home that day, my Father had a bike on the front porch of the house waiting for me. My father helped me to balance and drive the bike, every day we would practice until I could go by myself. After that, I could ride my bike up and down our street.
I practiced riding my bike every day, and sometimes Timmy would come over and bring his bike so that we could ride together now, and then my Mother would let me ride my bike over to Timmy’s house. We built a little obstacle course in Timmy’s backyard. We would run and jump off barrels and climb up on the monkey bars. I tried to climb up the rope; it dangled from the top of a tree, but I couldn't ever get very far up the line. Sometimes Eric would come over to Timmy’s house and run the obstacle course with us, but he was much better then we were. He made it look easy. On the weekends, my mother would let Timmy and Eric come over to spend the night. We would stay up late at night and try and scare one another with ghost stories. Sometimes we
