CHAPTER ONE
Rachel looked at the ad once more to make sure that what she was seeing was correct – ‘seeking a roommate to share extra bedroom in a two-bedroom house located in University District: Central, preferably college student’.
She had no other choice than to take up the offer as all affordable rooms for board on OSU campus were fully occupied. Her grant hadn’t come through on time which caused her to lose the room she had occupied since her freshman year. She was now in her senior year and everything seemed to be falling apart.
Her father lost his job at the bank which left only her mother to take care of everything from her meagre salary as an elementary school teacher.
She wished she could do something to help them but instead they were the ones struggling to get her through college. She had lied to them and told them that she had gotten a full scholarship to finish her final year when in fact it was only a partial scholarship.
Now here she was on campus totally homeless as she couldn’t afford the single occupancies which were the only options left on campus. As she looked at the ad once more, she knew she had to jump on the offer as it was even more reasonable than what she would have paid for a double occupancy.
She rang the number provided but there was no answer. On her fifth try, she had no other option but to drive over to the middle-class neighborhood where the house is located and try to make her pitch.
As Rachel came to a stop before the beautiful bungalow style home, she wondered who in their right mind could be renting it so cheap and hoped it wasn’t a psycho who wanted to find some way to lure college students to their deaths.
She threw that thought out the window as she made her way to the porch and lightly knocked on the brightly painted red door. She knocked twice more when there was no response. When no one answered, she gave up and with a defeated slump of her shoulders turned to walk back to her car.
The door swung open and a deep baritone voice asked, Can I help you?
Turning to face the voice she was met with forest green eyes that stared at her questioningly.
She was mesmerized by those eyes that seemed to draw her into a whole different world and she missed the fact that he had spoken once more.
"Can
