Myths About Alpha Women
Every day, women around the world dare to step into their wildest dreams and the power of their authentic lives—and every day, the world changes a little bit more. But not everyone is in favor of changing the world. In fact, a lot of the social and political structures that run our world depend on women playing small, staying silent, and following the rules. It’s in this place that we find dangerous myths being told about strong and powerful (aka Alpha) women.
In my own experience, whenever a woman is described as an Alpha, she’s viewed as one of two stereotypes. The first is that Alpha Women can’t work together. Put two or more Alphas together in a room and power struggles, jealousy, tempers, and emotional drama will flare. The second is that Alpha Women are too much
and must be broken
into compliance—otherwise, they’re just bossy, scary, dictatorial, difficult to work with, hard to manage, and arrogant.
Who wants to be any of that? None of the stories I was first told about Alpha Women felt empowering, or even fair. And despite these negative myths that surround Alpha Women, I still identified as an Alpha myself. But I wanted to describe and understand myself as an Alpha differently. I wanted to be a boss (just not bossy
), strong and confident, grounded, and secure enough in myself to support the other Alpha Sisters around me. I wanted to revise the definition of an alpha,
change the false narratives that surround strong women, and build a sisterhood (what became the Alpha Female Sisterhood) to empower and celebrate Alphas and all the magic we have to offer the world.
We are positive, strong, empowered, and high-performing female leaders. The myths about Alpha Women—the false and biased descriptions of us—actually describe bitches. And chances are, if you’re reading this book, you’re an Alpha. Or at the very least, you’ve started your journey towards becoming one.
Don’t Just Know Your Power, Claim Your Power
Many women, from their earliest years of life, were taught to deny, stifle, or hide their power in favor of being nice,
getting along with others, and not being too much.
We discover we’re smarter, harder workers, and more talented, gifted, and passionate than some of the people around us—but wind up keeping our skills and gifts to ourselves. (Seriously, how many of us know that we are The Shit, but just feel guilty admitting it?)
Too many of us are afraid to claim our power, celebrate our talents, and show up to our lives with our skills on full display. Instead, we downplay our power, avoid the spotlight, or even take on demeaning tasks in order to please other people or gain acceptance. Sometimes, women are afraid to claim their power for fear of failure or being rejected. (Sometimes women even fear success—and the life changes that come with it!) And too often, this behavior earns us acceptance and validation from society—after all, we’re following the rules.
But here’s the thing about fear: it gets you nowhere. Fear keeps you stuck, creatively blocked, financially trapped, emotionally suffocated, and in a place of zero growth—personally and professionally. (Not to mention fear is totally boring! You know what’s not totally boring? All those crazy cool talents you have. We want to see some of those.) Being an Alpha means that we need to get a bit more courageous; to take ourselves one step further, beyond just knowing our power. We can’t just stop at knowing our powers—we have to claim them
