Success Begins and
Ends with You
By Carmell Pelly
Entrepreneurship is a crash course in self-development. It is a passage to learning more about oneself than can be imagined. Ironically, I didn’t realize when I began creating my adult life that entrepreneurship was the way for me to go. I didn’t understand what it meant or what it would demand of me. Little did I know at the time, the most important lesson revealed itself to me as I matured: Be true to the light of who you really are.
As a young woman, I thought I could cut to the chase, skip in line, or start at the top. Instead of heading to a university or starting a 9-5 job like my peers, I chose to take on the world in a reckless and naïve, albeit enthusiastic way. I felt a rigorous school schedule and minimum wage employment would not bring me the fulfilling life I sought. These beliefs brought me much conflict in my early years, along with reality checks, as well as a life-long education which taught me that success is a state of mind.
Reality checks came hard and fast in my twenties. I thought something was wrong with me. Necessity meant getting one of the mundane jobs I despised. I felt miserable going to work on someone else’s schedule and most of the time my tasks seemed pointless. The money I did earn was so meager, it made no sense. I was a slave to a time clock, putting in hours and weeks with relatively little to show in return. I tried several avenues of employment, and with each I quit before being fired. My instincts would let me know when I was getting close to the end, so I’d just stop showing up and move on. While this was not the best use of my intuition at the time, it did set a foundation for listening to my gut
that now serves me well.
Valuing my intuition and knowing when I am aligned with my higher good has been instrumental in carving out my space in business. When I first started building my clientele, there was a time of feeling desperate and just wanting the money.
My passion for what I was doing quickly faded, and doing what I loved became another type of job stress, full of different kinds of headaches. I was in constant overwhelm and never had enough. No matter how hard I tried, things just would not work. It wasn’t until I relaxed, knowing that I would never go without, and got back to the love of what I was doing for the money to start flowing again.
Understanding how I’m thrown off-balance when I go against my inner knowing, and being strong enough to remove myself from situations that do not work for me on any level is key to my success. Knowing who I am mentally, spiritually, and emotionally makes me clear about my purpose. Admitting to myself what I do and do not like or what does and doesn’t work for me keeps me honest with myself about my next steps.
As a reformed people pleaser, this was the biggest challenge for me to overcome. I spent years going against my gut reactions, which put me in some terribly threatening situations. Growing up I was taught to suck it up and do what I was told. This was a hard habit to break. After repeated patterns of failure, even when I knew right from the start it would turn out that way, I finally started listening to my intuition. It meant moving through the anxiety of someone else being unhappy in order to do what I knew was right for me. Today, I still have some worry of disappointing others, but I know it does not serve me. I know when I am aligned with my higher power that I will be taken care of no matter how big the fear is.
I am not interested in a life that is driven by fears of disappointment or lack, and consequently full of drama and chaos. Even though I could act the part to get an immediate need met, ultimately people-pleasing does not make me happy. It sets up a false sense of who I am which colors relationships in negative ways. My goal is to be real in all situations, even if it makes others uncomfortable, because in the end, I must be comfortable with me, the decisions I make and especially how I go about making them as an entrepreneurial woman.
Allowing my soft sensual side to lead in my business is a gift. In the early stages, I felt if I acted more like a stereotypical male I would have more success. For me, this meant working in an aggressive and highly adrenalized way. In return, I suffered many symptoms such as frustration, anger, and burn-out. Trying to be who I wasn’t also lost me the respect of male colleagues. With much trial and error, I was able to identify patterns of behavior that led me to a more balanced flow of running a business in a feminine way.
Instead of exerting my power aggressively, I lead by example and with firm compassion. When feeling frustrated, instead of expressing that anger through blame or passing the buck, I focus on what needs doing, and also make time to address my feelings with trusted colleagues. If a task, project, or conversation is feeling forced, I take a step back to regroup and return to a natural flow. I allow the solution to problems to come through my intuition. I proactively take care of my physical and mental well-being. These more feminine ways are the business skills of the future.
When women connect to their softer feminine side and embrace it in the workplace, huge shifts will happen in learning to balance both masculine and feminine. Twenty years from now, the next generation of women will be more empowered to make decisions for themselves in their professional and personal lives. Whether they want to be single, married without children, have a family or have it all, they will be supported by the foundation built on the confidence and clarity of the women before them, and so on to the generations that follow. Women will feel differently about themselves by instilling self-worth, and possibly eliminating the shame when made to feel there is only the status quo by which to measure one’s achievements.
As the world changes there are so many new ways of doing business. We are showing our global daughters that they can make choices for themselves, and to define success in meaningful ways to them. They can choose to be a corporate mogul, or a stay-at-home mom and work. Women no longer have to choose work or family. There is no wrong way. Women who are now learning to balance their responsibilities are opening up future doors to self-reliance, to financially powerful contributions to the family and their communities. Through a willingness to be vulnerable, women bring strength, love and nurturance to the world. These are the choices of women I admire; they show us what can be done. Through example, we each build confidence, self-esteem and self-worth for all women. I for one am excited to be a part of this journey!
Sadly, for many girls and women, success is a foreign concept. In our families, finances, personal development and professional lives, embracing a private definition of success opens the doors for women to experience shared victories around the world. Some may attain material wealth, but it’s what we do with those resources that truly make us rich. Imagine being able to afford opportunities to connect with like-minded people, or explorations of otherwise hidden talents via extracurricular activities. What if you could further invest in learning environments, engage with holistic health professionals, or expand your perceptions by traveling the world?
They say time is money . . . How would you like to have more time to develop bonds within your family, or create a schedule that allows you to balance personal, family and professional needs? I’ve found peace in being grateful for the simple pleasures: organic produce, waking when I choose, not driving in rush hour traffic, setting my own hours, and being available to enjoy our local park when everyone else is on a standard work-day schedule. One of my ultimate definitions of success lies in being of humble service to my community. I have structured my life to include time to volunteer and give back, and in so doing, inspire others to do the same. I raise my children to pay it forward
as a way of living a fulfilling and successful life.
My journey to this understanding has been fraught with both challenges and blessings. Fifteen years ago I was addicted to opiates because they numbed my pain.
