    Declan Wingfield pulled the binder over his head, cursing as it stuck to his damp skin. He didn’t have long to change into his new uniform, and his stupid binder wasn’t making it any easier. He glanced at the chronometer in the corner and cursed again. He was going to be late, and it would be all his binder’s fault.

    With another firm tug, the binder slid down over his torso. Fingers shaking with the adrenaline of stress, he did the buttons on his uniform up. A glance in the mirror showed that his short brown hair was sticking up in damp spikes and needed to be tamed. His face was ruddy from the shower, and it showed in spite of his brown skin. Declan dressed faster than he had ever done in his life, and was out the door of his new quarters in the next instant.

    He jogged through the station and found that he was the last one to arrive to fall in with the rest of his comrades. That damned binder!

    Wingfield, you’re late! barked his new commanding officer, Lt. Chiung.

    Sorry, sir, Declan replied, feeling the pit of his stomach twitch with worry.

    Fall in, said Lt. Chiung.

    Declan did, and Lt. Chiung marched their formation down to the mess hall, where they filed in to have dinner. Declan finally let out the breath that he felt like he’d been holding the entire time they’d been marching. His new comrades shuffled down the line, all waiting for their turn to eat. Declan hadn’t met any of them yet because he’d requested and received separate quarters from the rest. They were the size of a shoebox, but they were still separate.

    He’d heard that training to be a Swarm pilot afforded little privacy. Declan had been worried that the others wouldn’t respect his gender if everyone could see his body.

    The line moved along, and he ended up sitting between a black girl with neat corn rows and a large Indian guy with a beard. Declan didn’t know anyone, but he was also the only recruit from
