    COUNTER PROGRAM

    By Dennis Coleman

I waited by the entry hatch for Colonel Madden and her team. The gray walls of the boarding lounge had been scrubbed to a dull sheen. We hadn’t seen the Colonel for some time, but I’d checked her records and I was certain we had all her favorite foods and beverages. I looked over at Andrew, Liz and Little Ben. They practiced their smiles for me.

Not so many teeth, Ben. You must learn. Ben had the form of a child. We found that travelers felt more comfortable with a small one around. It brought out their parental nature. His red hair and freckles always reminded them of someone from their past.

Andrew pushed his long hair back behind one ear. I frowned and pointed at his hand. Flaking skin. He should have used one of the bonding fluids on it. It had been a while since any of us had been through a proper maintenance.
