    Chapter Ten

Not only were these renegades a nasty lot, they had a weird sense of humour.

One of them threw a punch at Zero and missed. He ran headlong into the counter and gashed his head. It must have hurt like hell, judging by the blood gushing from the man’s scalp.

    Instead, he shouted, Gutterball!

When he lunged at Zero a second time, Zero clipped him with a right hook to the jaw.

Strike! Zero said over the prone body. How many of them had Zero and Navarro fought off so far? Shit. It seemed like hundreds. And they just kept coming. Where is Stride when I need him? He would have made short work of these creeps.

We got dropped down here an hour too soon. See what ogling you gets me? Navarro asked, a wicked grin on his sweaty face. He simultaneously fought off a couple of goons, winked at Zero and pressed some digits on his little black box.

Now! He jumped back, grabbed Zero and they soon found themselves standing under a bright, almost painful, circle of light. It beamed them to the street. The thugs were hard on their tails.

Zero blinked back blood as he followed the wily pilot who dodged the heavy-footed goons.

Blood. He and Navarro were covered in it. They raced down the street and practically dived back into the space craft, Exodus. When the door sealed shut behind them, Zero fell into the pilot’s seat and groaned with relief. Can I ask you why those goons try to kill people after curfew?

Somebody forgot it’s daylight savings time. Navarro worked the keypad of his box. I’m pissed.

    Earth still has daylight savings?

    Of course.

God, I miss Stride. Damn it all. He had to stop thinking about Stride. He was an obsession! I love him. Zero smiled when those three words entered his head even though smiling made his spilt lip hurt even more. What a dope I am. Love makes fools of us all.

They’re thugs, hired by the government. Navarro shrugged as if it was nothing. They get a fee for each body they bring in, plus it cuts down on the surplus population. Everyone’s moving to Earth nowadays. Too many immigrants from other species. Navarro sat down opposite Zero. And the government recycles the bodies for parts.

Zero made a face. Lovely. What in hell kind of world has this become?

What was the world like before? Navarro lifted an eyebrow.

It was…different, that’s all. It seems so…well, so cold now—mechanical and utilitarian. Zero only thought about his words after he’d uttered them. Hadn’t the world always been that way—intolerant of differences, people only thinking of the profitable bottom line, no matter what the consequences?

All good choices of words. The man interrupted his thoughts. So—he stood—how about we warm ourselves up a little and fuck?

The last of the die-hard romantics, Zero
