    Preface

I became accustomed to transitions at an early age. My family lived in several different communities throughout my childhood, and by the age of sixteen, I had attended seven different schools. I learned to make adjustments and expect the unexpected (my mother’s words). Looking back, I think of those years as surviving the new normal.

My mother never had a problem finding her voice. Her children were the center of her world. I grew up with eight siblings, and together, we learned the meaning of family values. With the full support of my father, she played a major role in nurturing and guiding us and providing us with a close-knit and loving family environment.

She expected all of us to do well in school. With a good education, you could get a good job and do anything you want. You’re not entitled—earn good grades, listen to the teacher, ask for help, and push yourself. Work twice as hard, and you will get ahead in life.

In high school, my social studies teacher encouraged me to go into education. I was the first and only child in our family to attend college, and I graduated with a BA. My mother couldn’t be prouder of me.

As an adult and single parent, I cared for my three children with the tender and loving care that was given to me by my parents. Despite being a working mother, I spent quality time with my children. Having a strong family is my priority even today.

A thirty-year career in education was my calling. It taught me to have fun, explore new ideas, help others
