Introduction
In 2010, my wife and I lived in a nice little 2-bedroom rental house with our 10-year-old daughter. I worked in a technical support call center for about $10 an hour and my wife worked at the local hospital for about the same hourly rate. We both worked at least 40 hours per week. We came home, cooked dinner, helped our daughter with school work, went to bed, got up, and did it all over again.
We did everything we thought we were supposed to do. We worked hard, paid bills, and stayed out of trouble.
Our rent at the time was $450 per month. We juggled utilities, a car payment, groceries, and gas for our cars. Luckily, we didn’t have credit card debt or student loan debt.
Despite our slim lifestyle, however, every two weeks replayed the same nightmare- We paid our bills and had nothing left over until payday.
We borrowed money for groceries. We borrowed money to pay our electric bill, often days before the cut-off date. We went years without car insurance, because we simply couldn’t afford it. I received three tickets for not having car insurance- all while driving to and from work. Those amounted to fines that we also couldn’t afford to pay.
I studied books on money management, but they mainly focused on getting out of debt. We didn’t really have debt. We just didn’t have enough money.
Something had to give.
When you’re that broke, people sometimes think you’re lazy; But, at the time, I believed the best way to save money was to do as little as possible. On my days off every week I would stay home, watch TV, play video games, or sleep because those things didn’t cost money. I knew if I left the house, it would cost me in gas and possibly food if I ate out.
The last straw for me was when we borrowed money from my wife’s cousin to pay our electric bill the day before it was due to be cut off. I remember feeling more embarrassed than I had ever felt. Borrowing money from one of our parents was one thing. Borrowing from other family members was worse. I hated asking for money- HATED IT. I didn’t want to be that guy. I didn’t want other people to look at us and wonder, What are they going to ask for this time?
That year I decided to do something about it. I decided to go outside, pick pecans, and sell them. Our rental house had several pecan trees in the yard and year after year there
