SYNOPSIS
I’m an award-winning baker and a co-owner of two popular restaurants with my twin brother.
I’ve been told I’m balanced and focused when it comes to my work. That was all true until the day she completely blindsided me. I wasn’t prepared for what happened next…
Morgan was always my competition during culinary school. We both strived to be number one in everything. Now we have to win a competition… as a team.
This should be an easy win though… and I’m not talking about the baking contest…
The man card series is a collection of romantic comedy short stories that are full of steamy romance. You're guaranteed that perfect happy ending and a cupboard full of sweets from all the cravings.
ONE
NOAH
"N oah. Art shook my hand so hard my body actually moved back and forth.
I’m so glad you could help."
Hi, Chef.
I pulled my hand back and rubbed each finger individually. You mentioned it was urgent, so here I am.
Even after all these years I still felt compelled to call Art, Chef. That was how we addressed him during culinary school.
Yeah,
He turned and started walking into the main kitchen. One of the instructors who was set to compete in the cookie competition coming up soon had to have emergency surgery.
I hope they’re okay?
As he started to share more of the details I took a moment to glance around the room. I noticed a woman with her back toward me, she had a long braid hanging down the center of her back. Was it her? I thought she’d graduated? My mind was so focused on the woman with the braid I didn’t notice Chef stop. I plowed right into his back. Shit, sorry.
I placed my hand on his shoulder.
Chef had always been laid back, so he actually burst out laughing the moment it happened. You okay?
Yeah.
I shook my head. I missed the last thing you were telling me.
Oh, about the instructors competing?
Um, instructors.
Yeah, do you remember Morgan Gray?
He stepped up beside the woman with the braid. She needs the emergency partner.
Fuck. It is her. The Morgan Gray.
We didn’t work well together. What we did do well together was compete against each other.
Right at the moment I honestly thought about backing out, Morgan turned around. Hey–
Then she stopped and I watched her glance over at Chef. Are you serious?
Chef looked at us both. What? You were in the same class. Plus, Noah competes yearly. I thought he would be the perfect replacement.
Perfect.
I mumbled.
Chef chuckled and walked around me. Come on, you both are professionals. You can handle a cookie competition together, right?
He slapped his hand on my back and started to walk away. I need to go make a call.
Once Chef was out of earshot Morgan grabbed the empty bowl and spatula and headed over to the three-compartment sink. This will never work.
She dropped the dirty dishes into the soapy water. I was planning to remove my name from the competition. So if you–
I placed my hand on her bicep. You can’t remove your name.
She turned to face me. And we can’t work together.
That was five years ago.
And that matters how?
The way her voice sounded, she obviously wanted to be any place but here at this moment.
It’s been five years. We both have careers. We’ve grown up.
We still love competing.
She turned her head to the side and sounded curious.
True.
I shrugged my shoulders. Don’t remove your name just yet. Think it over first.
She let out a heavy sigh and crossed her arms over her chest. I’ll think about it but I hate this.
I don’t.
I said the words as I was walking out of the kitchen. It was better to leave her with that bomb shell.
Morgan Gray was my competition in culinary school. Everything we did during school, every single project, we competed against each
