    FROM LUST TO SOMETHING ELSE…

    THE SHOE SHINE

My boots were dusty from dried snow and salt.  That’s how this whole thing started.  I stopped by Strawberry Square and saw him finishing his latest customer.

I had been stalking him for some time. Well not really stalking, just watching from around corner as he worked diligently on each customer. Then I would always stare down at my orthopedic shoes and wish they were bit sexier, so I could get a shoe shine from that beautiful man.

Somebody sound the trumpets, today was the day.  My semi-new boots, that I’d bought especially for this reason, had smears of salt from the recent snowfall and other random dirty remnants. It was time to approach and conquer.

I walked toward his stand. Nobody else was in the vicinity.  Having him all to myself for this moment in time made me feel giddy and light-headed. The lust I felt for this man was palpable, like a cloud of smoke around me.  I wanted him so badly and now was the time to make it happen.

He sat with his legs opened, torso hunched over while reading a newspaper and nonchalantly waiting for his next random customer.  My walk became slower and slower as I got closer to him. Once I got into his personal space I could smell his cologne, slightly spicy with a hint of something like grass or wheat. It was ultimately manly and perfect for him.

Can I get a shoe shine Sir?

He looked up with a smile and cocked his head to the left.

Why of course pretty lady.  I see the rock salt has gotten to your boots as well.  Have a seat.

I tried to gracefully get up into the chair and he saw me struggling and gently guided me into the seat.

Thank you. I said breathlessly and feeling off-kilter when his hand let go of mine and the other had left my hip.

He sat back into his stool and carefully peered at each of my shoes, turning my feet ever so slightly to look at all of the angles.

These are fairly new boots, aren’t they?

Yes, how can you tell? I asked with a grin.

Shoes are my business madam. It’s my job to know what I’m working with every day.

He pulled out a big brush with soft bristles, black shoeshine wax and two different kinds of towels. I was mesmerized watching him work so diligently at his craft.  He brushed the salt from each shoe and gave them a good toweling with the rough side of the towel. Then he started the waxing with a soft pad.

So what’s your name? I asked cautiously while still watching him work his magic on my boots.

Trevor and yours? He never looked up as he answered and asked.

Mel…well it’s short for Melanie…but everyone just calls me Mel. I was a babbling idiot now.

It’s nice to meet you Mel. I hope you’ll come to see me again.

I fought with myself about telling him that I’d been working up the nerve to talk to him for months.  I decided to keep that little stalker tidbit to myself.

I definitely will come see you again, and I’ll recommend that my friends come too.

That’s great, thank you and you’re done.

With a snap of the softer towel on the tips of both shoes, he looked at his handiwork and I could tell he was quite satisfied.

They look beautiful. I gushed and instantly felt stupid again.

Mel, how would you like to meet me for dinner later?

I would love to. I was still trying to modulate my voice so that it wouldn’t sound squeaky or low and mannish.

"Great I’ll see you back here around 5 when I close up shop and we can walk to the little Mexican spot down the
