    Chapter 1

    Odin’s Eye

I close my eyes and inch my way to the edge. A gust of wind passing by nearly knocks me off. I slowly exhale and fall forward. I’m hurled through the air as I come rushing face first to the street. In the middle of this thought a faint noise sounding like it’s a distance away starts to become louder and louder, as I come back to myself. I take a deep breath then exhale, as I take one last look out the window realizing that my opportunity has passed. I turn my back to the window and walk over to turn off my alarm. I guess it’s time for me to wake up. I look over at my desk where my computer sits hibernating peacefully. Time to get back to work. As the screen awakes the only thing that can be seen is programming languages and line after line of codes. I take a deep breath exhaling slowly while I turn back to programming.

I used to be a the happiest kid; playing outside with friends, playing sports, and being a kid in every sense of the word. My parents Maria and Jerry, are the best supporting mother and father and their hardworking people. My father is a software engineer and my mother ran her own community sports park. I was able to be on any team I want to and get anything from the concession stand. I tend to show off what I could do and act like the park was my own paradise, because in a sense it was. When I wasn’t playing sports I would watch my father program. I grew up watching him since I was young. He creates security software, applications and programs for a company he started. I enjoy standing next to my father just watching him write codes than playing sports. He taught me some of the basics and over time I started to get the hang of it. I took all of this for granted and in an instant everything changed. I was only twelve when my life, as I knew it, was taken away from me.

It was the last game of the season and I couldn’t be happier, because I hate baseball, but my mother insist that I play. Smack! Here it comes. I got it! I yell to center field as the ball teetered between center field and right field. I ran straight for it, looking right at it, glove in the air, smiling since this was it. I’m going to catch it, the batter will be out, and I wouldn’t have to play baseball anymore. As the ball came closer and closer and my glove still raised in the air, I close my eyes. This is it! I can’t stop smiling while the thought of this game being over raced through my head. The ball came soaring down before hitting my glove and falling to the ground. Damn it! I pick the ball up and throw it back in. Another batter gets up to hit and I go back to doing what I usually do; sitting on the ground and picking the grass. When the game was over I walk over to my mother, as she’s standing by the dugout smiling. What an exciting game! My mother starts to jump in place while clapping her hands. Mom stop! That’s embarrassing and that was the longest game ever! Look it’s already dark. As she looks down at me complaining, her face started to shift. Her lips change from a smile to a deep frown. As she’s frowning, she places her index finger on her bottom lip. How about some ice cream to celebrate? I bit the hook. Can I get two scoops please. I stand there smiling showing all my teeth to my mother, as if that would help to ensure the ice cream. She replies back smiling and laughing saying, But of course. Unbeknownst to me, we’re meeting up with my father at the ice cream parlor.

I think I know what I want. I was gleaming with excitement. I think I know what you want as well. My mother has this calming look to her and as I’m staring into her peaceful face she said, Vanilla right? I usually get the same thing; I mean it is my favorite. As I open the door for my mother, I see my father sitting at the table with a cup of ice cream in front of him. I’m surprise that he’s here and not at home on the computer talking to himself as he writes his codes. My father is just sitting at the table gripping the cup of ice cream with both hands staring down into it like it was talking to him. Before we could walk inside or I could say anything he looks our way. He stands up and announce, I see your uniform is still spotless. My father always has a stern voice that shook me to my core no matter what he is saying. I almost caught the last ball to win the game! I said this and instantly wanted to retract that statement. Almost? My father stared deep into my eyes, as he waited for me to answer his question. Before I could respond again my mother shot him a look and whispered, Jerry! My father always taught me that whenever you do something to see it to the end and put everything you have to completing the task at hand. My father looks to my mother then smiles and
