Twisting the doorknob, I take a deep breath. Nerves are coursing through me like a spidery current, and for some reason, I’m unable to get them under control. I’ve never been a person that likes change, and especially not change that takes me away from my entire family. But here I am, arriving at my dorm room at the prestigious Hawthorne Academy. I should be grateful, but instead, all I feel is nervous.

I swing the door open and roll my suitcase in behind me, letting the door shut loudly. Looking around, I see that the room isn’t anything special, which is a little bit of a disappointment. It just looks like a normal dorm room. There are two twin beds, two desks, and two dressers, although one set of furniture is already claimed by my future roommate. In the center of the room is a large teal rug, and the walls are painted a light gray. Plus, my new roomie evidently has matchy-matchy taste: she’s coordinated her bedspread to the rug to the accent pillows in teal and gray. She also has pictures set up on her dresser, and her clothes are draped around the room in different places. Clearly, my new roomie likes to spread out because her stuff is scattered everywhere.

Grunting, I pick up my heavy suitcase and plop it down on the second bed, wondering if I’m ever going to get used to the fact that I now live somewhere else. This is a far cry from the small town that I’m from, that’s for sure. But it’s all for the better because Hawthorne Academy is offering me a chance to make something of myself, and that opportunity is priceless.

I undo the clasps on the suitcase and smile wryly. I don’t have much, but that’s okay because we wear uniforms at the academy. It’s your classic girls’ private school outfit: a white blouse that buttons down the front, with a plaid skirt in maroon and black with maroon knee-high socks and shiny penny loafers. It’s a little bit like a costume, but that’s okay. Wearing a uniform will help me hide how shabby my real clothes are.

It doesn’t take me long to unpack. There are hangers in the closet for the few items I brought that are non-uniform, and the rest of my things go into the dresser that I am assuming is mine because it’s empty.

As I fold my socks and underwear, and place them gently in the drawer, I try to feel excited about coming to Hawthorne. After all, I should be grateful to be here, and on scholarship no less. My old high school was frankly dangerous with gangs that roamed the halls and metal detectors at the entry gates. By contrast, Hawthorne has none of that. It’s set in the woods far from any violence, and everyone who goes here comes from a family made of money. Tuition is in the five figures, and my eyes began to tear when I received my scholarship letter. Coming to Hawthorne wasn’t just a relief for me, but also for my family. With one less mouth to feed, my mom and my sister will be able to buy more food and maybe even go to the movies once in a while.

That’s why I have to keep focused and on track while I’m here. Girls from Hawthorne have a future: they actually go to college and have important jobs instead of working the counter at the local five and dime. Even the not-so-smart ones do okay because they’re able to meet wealthy men and live lives of luxury. Meanwhile, the girls where I come from hardly ever graduate from high school, and often have three kids by the time they’re twenty-five. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just not what I want for myself. That’s why coming to here is another big step: I might be able to escape my small-town roots and actually chase my dreams.

But who knows what’s going to happen? Maybe it’s too late already. After all, I’m a senior transfer, which means I only have one year at Hawthorne. The transfer was unusual in and of itself because most people switch at
