Chapter 1 – Personal Development
1. Write down your personal goals.
If you do not write your goals down, they will merely be wishes. Something magical happens when you put pen to paper, your writing etches its way into your subconscious. Writing by hand can be more powerful than on a computer, just as with any learning.
2. Picture the finish line.
Image your finish line. Reflect on your big goal. Feel the anticipation leading up to the event. What does it feel like, smell like, taste like, sound like? See it in your mind like it was actually happening. Let your imagination revel in the moment as if you were right there.
3. Break your goals into small parts.
One of the primary reasons people fail to achieve their goals is because they felt overwhelmed and quit. This is often because the original goal was too big. You can avoid this, however, by breaking your goal into smaller, more manageable parts. That way, your goal that seemed so big and daunting becomes something that can be accomplished over time in several steps. Upon completing these steps, you'll realize that you've reached the goal that you originally found overwhelming or even impossible.
4. Visualize your goals.
Once you set a goal, visualizing it is a powerful way to stay on track. If you can see
results in your mind, you’re more likely to feel positive about the work you need to do to get there. Plenty of successful people have used visualization to reach their goals even Jim Carrey credits it for his success as an actor. After all, if you can dream it, you can achieve it.
5. Take one small step each day.
Start at the level where you are then grow and increase your skill level and output over time. Do something. Inaction is a killer of big dreams. The sad reality is that if you don’t take action to pursue your dreams nobody will do it for you. Action implements ideas. Simply start. Action strengthens you. It grows you, makes you smarter, you learn more, you self-correct as you move along, you improve and become better.
6. Take the first step towards achieving your goals.
Taking the first step is perhaps the most difficult thing to do in achieving a dream. There are a lot of mental obstacles that make it difficult to take that first step.
Here are some don’ts to help you solve the mental obstacles:
Don’t wait until the situation is perfect.
You should not wait until the situation is perfect because the situation will never be perfect. No matter how or when you see it, there will always be something that make you think again.
Don’t wait until other people agree with you.
Just like you shouldn’t wait for the situation to be perfect, you shouldn’t wait until everybody agrees with your idea. There will always be opposition, and that is perfectly normal. If you wait until there is a consensus, you will never start.
Don’t wait until your skill is good.
We might think that we need to have good skill before we start doing something. But the truth is, you will learn much more by doing than by waiting. Doing allows you to hone your skill much faster than just learning the theory.
7. Do small things in a big way.
Big or small accomplishments, it’s all about how much work we put into them and how excellent we do them. The best way to make a difference is by pursuing excellence no matter how big or small our tasks may be. It’s just like doing things right the first try. Never settle for mediocrity, choose only excellence. That is when we will really make a big difference.
8. Cultivate initiative.
Legendary Coach John Wooden said, Initiative is having the courage to make decisions and take action. People with initiative will take action when action is needed.
Taking initiative involves getting past your fears – fear of the unknown and the fear of failure. Developing initiative means you make decisions. If you’ve been alert, you’ve gathered valuable information through your experiences. You’ll use this together with what you observe in the moment to make a choice. Depending on the time you have, you’ll weigh the possible options in your mind. Once you’ve settled into a choice, you pull the trigger with immediate action.
9. Believe that you can make it.
Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don't wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it's at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.
10. Don’t give up/keep pushing forward.
There are days when all we ever encounter are roadblocks, preventing us from moving forward. The moments when our dreams seems so out of reach make us wonder if it’s truly worth pursuing or fighting for. "Don’t listen to what anybody says except the people who encourage you. 11. Be open-minded.
To be more open-minded, then the first thing you have to do is embrace something that is completely foreign to you. Sure, this may sound a bit broad, but the unknown can really mean something as simple as taking a different route to work, finally accepting that coffee date with your neighbor, or seeing a movie by a director you’ve never heard of. If you want to be more open-minded, then you should try to embrace one new unknown thing every week or even every day.
12. Ask for feedback.
Getting useful feedback can be the fastest route to growth and improved performance. It’s not always an accurate reflection of who you are — it often isn’t. But it is always an accurate reflection of how you’re perceived. And knowing how you are perceived is critically important if you want to increase your influence as a leader.
13. Exercise your creativity muscles.
Creativity works a lot like a muscle, you have to exercise it for it to work properly. Once you get stuck in a cycle of routine, it’s easy to feel like you’ve lost your creativity. Maybe you’re not contributing innovative ideas during team meetings anymore, or maybe you just feel like you’re doing the same thing every single day. Whatever
