Prologue
I waited in the dugout, the smell of the grass and sweat hitting my nostrils. My name was being chanted over the screams, my adrenaline increasing with each voice I heard.
Coleman! Coleman! Coleman!
I smiled and waved at the fans.
We needed one more run to win the game and had no people on the bases. I stretched out my arms, trying to focus on bringing my teammates home. The dull ache in my shoulder was becoming worse, the cortisone shot I’d gotten earlier wearing off. Just a few more minutes. Please don’t give up on me yet. The physical therapist came out and rubbed my shoulders, releasing some of the tension. I rolled it, feeling a little less stiff. I was as ready as I’d ever be.
I stepped onto the plate, focusing on the pitcher in front of me, and pushed the pain into the back of my mind. My shoulder was starting to wear out. The doctor had told me that I needed to slow down before I damaged it beyond repair. He didn’t understand that baseball was my life. I had to play, otherwise I was nothing. I had nothing. The team was my family, had been since I was drafted when I was twenty. I’d never looked back, not in the past eight years. My past was long gone, a distant memory of a troubled childhood and a life of crime that I’d almost succumbed to. Coach Anderson had seen something in me and helped me clean up my act. Tonight would make it our sixth World Series win. I’d vowed to never let Coach down.
I scuffed my cleats in the dirt, swinging the bat behind me to finish warming up. The pitcher spat on the ground, the ball going behind his back. It was time to make this game my bitch.
He threw his signature fastball and I missed. He smiled at me and tipped his hat. I gripped the bat in my hand, frustration threatening to boil over. I wouldn’t let him beat me, not today, not ever.
I positioned myself again, ready to pulverize whatever he pitched my way. Like a white flash, the ball left his hand. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, opening them just as my bat connected with the ball. The stadium was quiet as it flew through the air. Bodies leaped for it but missed and I took off in a run. I had to make it home. My legs pumped, my shoulder screaming. I made it all the way to third base before the outfielder managed to catch up.
The base man at home positioned himself as close to the base as he could, ready to stop me from
