    Chapter Eleven

As the mortar exploded overhead, it illuminated the area all around Kenny, and Logan realised that in this dream, he was an observer to what was happening. As Logan stood there, he watched Kenny improvise several booby traps with his grenades. Glancing over to where the jungle met the cleared area of no man’s land, Logan could see the Viet Cong soldiers worming their way across the dirt. He wasn’t sure how they were doing it, and he was having a hard time seeing them, even though he knew they were there.

Something told Logan that no one on the base had a chance of surviving. He wasn’t sure he could watch Kenny die, not caring that it was simply a dream. He’d seen too many men lose their lives in real life to want to go through it one more time while he slept.

Logan had been lucky that his flashbacks only hit him during the day, and for some reason, were never about any of his buddies dying. Suddenly Kenny spoke, jerking Logan out of the fugue he’d been in.

I never told him I loved him.

Logan looked around, trying to find who Kenny was talking to, but it appeared that he was simply talking to himself. Maybe it was what a man did when he knew he was about to die. When he was alone at the back of a surrounded base with no one coming to help him, he spoke aloud to the only person who was there—himself.

I should’ve gone with him, Kenny muttered as he checked the magazines for his M-16 rifle.

There were only four magazines on the ground where Kenny knelt, and after the booby traps he’d set up, there was only other grenade. Logan knew how quickly a soldier could go through ammo, and he knew Kenny wouldn’t last long.

"I was a coward, just like my father always called me. If I wasn’t a coward, I would’ve gone with Harold when he asked. I was afraid of what the people in the town might think
