Chapter Eight
The sounds of incoming mortars shocked him, and he was disoriented as he tried to remember where the nearest bunker was. Men shouted around him while running to their defensive positions. He stared down at his trembling hands.
Why was it so hard to think? It wasn’t his first firefight. Hell, he’d been dropped right into the middle of a battle his first day in country. Yet something about this paralysed him. Maybe it was the suddenness of the attack or the sheer unexpectedness of it.
Both sides had agreed to a ceasefire while they’d observed the celebrations for the Tet Lunar New Year, and the US military had agreed as well. But here were the Viet Cong breaking the truce while the rest of them were sleeping. They should’ve known better than to trust the bastards.
Deep breaths, Kenny. You can do this.
His head shot up, and he glanced around wildly. What was Harold doing there? He should be in California or Canada, anywhere besides this hellhole. But Harold wasn’t there. In fact, there wasn’t anyone near him. They had all gone to the other side of the base where the enemy attack seemed concentrated.
As a rocket exploded over the area, he looked out beyond the foxholes to where the no man’s land was between the base and the jungle. There were men crawling across it towards him. Shit! He was going to be overrun, and there wasn’t anything he could do about it.
Take some of the bastards out with you then, Kenny.
The voice that was Harold’s, yet couldn’t be, ordered him.
He knew it wasn’t Harold’s because his lover would never tell him to kill another person. Harold hadn’t even liked to go hunting with him back home. A lot of the other guys had picked on him, calling him ‘sissy’ and ‘girly’ for not wanting to take a life, but Harold had ignored them for the most part.
