About this ebook

From Afghanistan — A Timeless Tale of Love and Betrayal

An innocent man must lose his freedom, an innocent girl must yield her virginity, in this traditional tale from an era of kings.

From bandit attacks in a forest to treacherous plots at court, love will undergo many trials with Allah's help, even if it comes in the form of a cheeky little mouse!

This book fulfils a promise the author made to an Afghan restaurant owner who outlined the plot to him, and is accompanied by the author's own audiobook narration.

Let this fable transport you to a world of spicery and silk!

    Preface

I left England in 1991 to live and work in New York City. I was ambivalent about the whole thing. Yes, I was pursuing a career opportunity in journalism, as well as a long cherished dream of embracing the US side of my dual citizenship. But I didn’t love the city’s reputation for violence nor the hostile reception it dished out to me in the beginning.

Of course, things got better as I made friends, embraced New York’s cultural wealth and diversity, took up dancing and acting, and found places of sanctuary. Among those sanctuaries was the Ariana Afghan Restaurant on 9th Avenue in Midtown.

There was always a warm welcome awaiting me there, and I became friends with the proprietor, Wali. He and I would have long chats over vegetarian curries, or baklava and sweet tea, and over time I learnt more about his life growing up in Afghanistan, his search for his father who had been arrested, and the odyssey of his family’s escape through frozen wastes from then Soviet-occupied territory.

But Wali assimilated well into the foreign culture, probably better than I, as I discovered when we went to a nearby nightclub and I enviously watched him bumping and grinding with the assembled beauties!

Wali told me he had a story from Afghanistan he wanted to share, not just with me but with the world, and he asked me to write it. That was back in 2002, since when it lay dormant in a computer hard drive (as, alas, so many great stories do).

But I was recently inspired to revisit the story after watching the beautiful animated film, The Breadwinner, also set in Afghanistan. I realized anew that there was a tale of beauty and blessing to be told there, that I must share it, and that, after these years of wilderness inbetween, I am finally in a position to do so and fulfil my promise.

So here it is, my friend!
