About this ebook

Lynn Hallbrooks has loved the idea of writing since her childhood but never considered it seriously until after serving in the military (USAF) and working in hospitals was no longer a viable option. When she isn't writing, she is helping others especially fellow authors.

Genesis - Lynn Hallbrooks
Preface
DEAR READER,
This novella is a companion piece to the Call Sign: Wrecking Crew series. The main characters will be familiar to the followers of the series. In part this story is dependent on the other books because we didn't go into much character detail. In addition, we mention incidents from the first two books and hint at things to come in book three. The general theme of the novella is back stories on how the main characters came to know one another.
We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we did writing it.

As happens sometimes in this business of self-publishing, the original formatting did not come out how it was intended. Lynn went through and italicized the characters’ thoughts as well as words that would be stressed when spoken. In re-reading, she also discovered some areas that needed a little more explanation or missing words. It is our sincere hope that these improvements will help you to enjoy this novella even more.

Genesis: Slice of Life
9 February 2018
Houston EPSI Operations’ Center
MAC OPENED THE DOOR and escorted Deb inside. While the door shut out the cool crisp Friday evening, she noticed the rows of tables. I remember when this place looked like Sons of Anarchy. Right now, it looks like a seminar center.
They laid down their packages. After hanging up their matching dark chocolate leather jackets, they noticed the conference room blinds were down. Deb said in a soft voice, Looks like the bosses are in a meeting.
Mac nodded and the couple went to work decking out the team house for the upcoming festivities. Mac began stocking the bar, while Deb set about placing tablecloths and decorations.
Fifteen minutes later, Frieda and J.T. strolled in. Frieda walked up to Deb and gave the usual hug and peck on the cheek. Much to Frieda’s dismay, Deb acted unmoved. Since the time the two ladies met, Deb liked Frieda as a person. Out of respect, she learned to deal with Frieda’s ‘European’ greeting but the action always sent undesired chills down her spine.
Frieda asked Deb, How can we help?
Deb explained the plan and handed her some tablecloths. The ladies teamed up on the decorating task.
J.T. walked behind the bar and without a word began helping Mac stock. The men looked up 15 minutes later when T.K., Maria, Anna, and their children, Jesus and Angelica, had arrived. Each was carrying something to contribute to the celebration. The aroma of homemade enchiladas, tacos, tamales, Mexican rice, and black beans filled the air. Everyone inhaled deeply to show their appreciation of Anna and Maria’s week long preparation.
After Anna put down the dish she had carried in, she gave Frieda a hug and a light kiss on the lips. This had become their customary greeting when out in public. It showed that she adored Frieda.
When Anna went around the bar and gave J.T. the same greeting, Mac just shook his head. J.T. gave Mac a look that said ‘I know it’s an ego trip but life is too damn short and I’m enjoying this while it lasts so just deal with it’. The two men had been together so long that each look they gave one another took on a particular meaning that no one else but them understood.
Maria arranged all the food, dishes, and cutlery on the serving table while Anna looked after the children. Anna spoke softly to the children in their native tongue. Remember, be respectful as this is the operational center of Eagle Protective Services, Incorporated. This event is an exception to the daily rules. Being in the team house today is a privilege extended only to the staff’s family. Never forget, it was because of members of this company that you are safe in your mothers’ and aunts’ arms.
T.K. pulled his vehicle away from the front door as Deano and Katie were pulling into the lot. A moment later,
