DNatureofDtrain Poetry and Stories - Casey Heinzism

The Last night as Mr. Jones.

It was late just got off a long hard run,

Volunteered back to work to get the job done.

Had a good reputation, and had high seniority,

I could not disappoint the railroad’s majority.

Mr. Tate had taken ill with cramps,

The track was still flooded and the air was damp.

I was tired but needed to get the job done,

On time to Canton I thought this train could run.

We had left a half hour behind time,

The destiny was set for me to see the divine.

I knew that my life was gonna be cut short,

so a race onto Canton so I could resort.

I want to see my wife and children again,

I knew that my life was soon gonna end.

But I had no idea it was to be that night.

As I pulled open the throttle to get the job done right.

The track ahead was to be open and clear,

Highballing down the High Iron felt good and so dear.

Until we rounded that curve outside of Vaughan,

The torpedo went off and we had so longed.

Sim Said Casey we better slow down,

I said it’s for the north switch we are southbound.

We looked for the flagman and I couldn’t see,

until it was to late the caboose was in front of me.

Newberry stood there flagging on down from his post,

He was to close to the caboose I had noticed.

I threw the Johnson bar into reverse,

threw open the sanders, and hoped not the worst.

I had yelled at Sim to jump,

I stayed at my post knowing my life was done.

As I rode into the splinters and into the debris,

I thanked God for the good life he has given me,

My last thoughts were of my children and wife,

and the good things I have done throughout my life.

    I had gone on
