    Chapter 1

William, or Will as everyone called him, checked his tie in the reflection of the mirror, making minor pointless adjustments.

Don’t you just hate these events where you have to wear a tie? It’s stuffy, uncomfortable, and I feel like I’m choking the man next to Will, probably in his late forties, said while tugging at this own tie.

Not at all, replied Will, I quite enjoy getting dressed up. It’s not often I get a chance to.

I didn’t think people did such formal engagement parties anymore. The man said adjusting his jacket.

Will smiled at the remark, I didn’t think people did engagement parties at all, he said opening the door and indicating for the man to go first, nowadays it’s just announcements on social media and group texts.

The man nodded in appreciation at Will and walked through. It’s just good to see someone still going about things the old fashioned way. Will said as he followed.

I suppose you’re right the man said. Noticing a woman waving at him, the man returned the wave, and turned to Will. There’s my wife, the man said extending his hand, you have a good evening.

You too, Will replied shaking the outstretched hand.

En route to the bar Will heard his name being called and walked over to the blonde woman waving at him. Will! I haven’t had a chance to talk to you the whole night. She said as she embraces him.

Cindy, you are the guest of honour, of course everyone will be demanding your attention. Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials. Will said straightening up.

Thank you. Cindy replied, a feint blush rising in her cheeks, I’m so happy I could die!

Oh, Will, I’d like you to meet April. She said indicating to the woman standing next to her, Will and I went to high school together. He’s been one of my longest standing friends. April and I interned together back in the day, and now she’s making quite a name for herself.

Nice to meet you, Will smiled and extended his hand to April.

Nice to meet you too, April replied shaking his hand.

April had deep brown eyes that sparkled in the venue’s chandelier light. She wore just a touch of makeup that accentuated her beauty and had a warm smile that immediately made Will feel comfortable. Dressed in a stylish black cocktail dress and holding a small black clutch bag, she was a vision of loveliness.

It’s fantastic to be here to celebrate such a special moment for such a wonderful couple. April said.

Speaking of couples, Cindy responded, where’s Michael?

Michael unfortunately has another event on tonight, April replied smiling, but he does say congratulations.

That’s too bad. Cindy said, and then waved at other guests trying to get her attention.

Will, April knows no-one else here, Cindy
