    Chapter One

    …Tommy Mallard!

When his name was spoken, a huge cheer went up from the crowd around us, and I felt a dizzying mix of emotions that almost knocked me off my feet; relief, joy, excitement, disbelief. I caught his eye from the stage, and he raised his eyebrows at me, a smile breaking across his face, as I managed to shoot him a thumbs-up and reached for my drink. I stood up and took his hand, brow furrowing as I looked over his shoulder at Sheila, my supervisor.

You’ll be running Tommy’s campaign, she explained, and I could tell she was doing her level best to act like this was the most natural thing in the world. But this was an enormous get for our company – we’d done PR for a handful of politicians before, but in truth, none of them had been majorly successful. To have some upstart candidate for mayor walk in here and choose us to do his campaign? Well, he must have been intent on doing things differently, that much
