    Sold Curves–The Sheik - Q. Zayne

    Teaser

    I BLUSHED.

What now? I whispered. In range of The Broker's pheromones, the proposition didn't strike me as extreme anymore. Me, Rose, once a good girl of my parish, I could sell myself. I'd become a sex toy for a sheik.

    First Step into the Dark

I NAVIGATED TO THE Marketplace website on my new tablet. I didn't let myself look at the many unsavory categories served by this online point of exchange. I didn't want to know how bad and lawless it got in that zone. It felt bad to be a part of anything that allowed all kinds of illegal ads, but I wasn't going to find what I needed in any legitimate place.

I'd heard about the site from a friend of Liam's. Poetic justice, if such a term ever applied to a mafia hitman getting his reach cut. That's what I hoped I was about to do.

He found me at my latest refuge. When I got back from picking up some groceries so I could use the tiny kitchenette instead of going out much, I discovered he'd already been there. He put a note under the door to let me know: Got you. His idea of a joke. It took me 30 minutes to stop shaking. I couldn't escape. I'd dyed my hair, dressed like a frump, got a fake ID, and rented this suite 200 miles away from home where I knew no one. I even ditched my phone and bought one with cash, in case he'd been tracking me with it. I took a bus, also paid with cash. I knew the drill, I didn't tell anyone my destination. Not one person.

I slumped at the table in the plain room where no signs of my identity remained. I'd lost everything because I once loved him and he wouldn't let me go. A bad man. Liam was a bad man. That excited me at the beginning. I didn't believe he'd be bad to me. I was only thirty-two, but I felt way older than the idiot I'd been when I responded to Liam's dangerous charm.

No way I'd live the rest of my life like this, running and hiding, knowing any day he'd find me. One day he'd make good his promise to take me back, by force. No one would stop him. Grown men pissed themselves when Liam frowned.

The illicit website looked like any public site for posting ads. The one difference was this one was far underground. You could order anything here.

Not for the first time, I wished I had the nerve and money to order a hit on my ex-boyfriend. He was completely ex, over, irredeemable, and so not getting it. Well, maybe in some tiny part of his brain, he understood I didn't want him, but he'd never accept it. He'd never let go, like some creature that locks its jaw on its prey and will hold on forever, beyond death.

I shuddered. No point giving Liam more credit, being latched onto by him in the present was bad enough without bringing the afterlife into it.

I composed the ad. The words came in fits. What do you say when you need someone to fix your life and don't have much money to offer them for doing it? I wasn't sure what the fix would look like except I had to disappear.

I knew what it meant. I'd been watching crime shows since I was small. I knew what kinds of mistakes got people caught. Any slip the police could find, Liam could find. That meant no friends, no family, no familiar places, no identifiable belongings: a complete stripping of my life and identity. The charm bracelet from my mom I'd had since junior high would give me away. Security cameras were almost everywhere. It wasn't enough to change my hair and clothes, I had to hide or change my face, wear sunglasses and hats to foil face recognition software. Most of all, I had to get to someplace he wouldn't look for me. No more cat and mouse in familiar territory. Either that or I had to die. Die on paper. He made me crazy, but I wasn't suicidal. I wanted to live, I wanted to live without another sight or word of him ever again. I wanted my
