    PROLOGUE

Bad Selection in the Wine Cellar

I’ve always thought that love is not for me. I’ve watched and found that love isn’t very different from betting. It’s like poker, where everyone bets for something, an option based solely in false hope, expecting to win the greatest prize: love.

My name is Tyra Shaw, and I’m currently a full-time employee at Arden’s Restaurant, which is located in a prime Cape Cod location where every employee wants to work because the money potential is incredible. Since I’m one on the forefront tending bar, it’s normal for me to meet new and interesting people daily; from young, handsome men to older men who only want to hook up with any girl. Right now, at twenty-five years old, I have only one thing in mind—move forward with my life, without depending on a man or love to live.

    * * *

Each season, some of the faces familiar to Tyra returned to work again at the restaurant, along with many applicants who came in to fill a few positions. What she mostly viewed of those applying were blondes with hair highlights, hair lowlights, and some girls who forgot to wear a bra and display their perky headlights. Tyra had dark hair, never colored a strand lighter, and she stood out amongst all of the blondes from that cape side town.

Arden’s Restaurant was fine dining and a luxurious place, which was why people of money often visited it, deciding to first stop for a pre-dinner drink at the bar. Tyra had many repeat patrons who enjoyed the creative drink selections she served, some of which she concocted. Whiskeys, martinis, vodkas with a twist, or any other cocktail, she served it all. With time, serving drinks and watching as people drank them down became a special art for her. Especially staring at the expressions on their faces when they slowly brought their glasses to their lips, and the way their eyes lit up with the first taste of the alcohol. This often amused her and brought a smile to her face.

During a previous summer season, the restaurant was under the management of David Straub. That summer, Tyra’s one-time hookup with Zach was caught on the restaurant’s surveillance cameras. Although she tried to wipe the quick fucking that took place from her mind, she knew the video was long erased. Luckily, her friend, Lavin, took care that she was never put in the public eye naked and engaging in sex where she worked.

It was a very late night working at the restaurant. Tyra remembered as the evening played out, Zach had pulled Haylee aside, just as she happened to walk past. Unfortunately, Tyra couldn’t block out hearing him sharing his romantic feelings for Haylee.

Haylee, just give me a chance, one chance. I like you so much, and I know I could make you happy.

Not wanting to intrude on their conversation, Tyra tuned them out, and did not hear Haylee’s response. However, it had to have been bad, because moments later, Zach was tugging her hand, not Haylee’s, as he pulled her along his side into the wine cellar, saying, Why haven’t you and I gotten together? Everyone seems hell-bent on Heath, the restaurant owner’s son, and here you and I are, both unattached. I think we could be great together.

Hurt reflected in his eyes, but it wasn’t from the two of them not hooking up before, it was the after affect of Haylee letting him down. Tyra, though, hadn’t let him down. In fact, she carried hope for them to connect that evening and for the rest of that summer. She wanted the chance with him, hoping he would fall for her like he did for Haylee, especially since Haylee wasn’t giving him her heart. Zach had pressed his lips hard on Tyra’s. Nothing soft, sweet, or gentle. They stripped quickly, and just as fast his dick filled her.

Tyra’s mind still remembered it all too well, that one night in the wine cellar where it was obviously not a bottle being uncorked and poured in an expensive glass to taste, but her legs spreading open instantly for Zach to fill.

One night, they had sex. Nothing more or less in her mind. Quick to enter, and more rapid to dress, and no romance on his part. Their clothes fell to the floor, and she stood exposed, offering herself to him. She thought he would kiss her, ravish her, and take her. His lips didn’t passionately touch hers. His hard, lengthy dick pushed inside, filling Tyra but not completing her. He didn’t moan her name. His silence was cold. In and out his dick moved. She reached her arms to hold him, but he shrugged them off. His dick was the only connection. Zach came, she did not. He pulled out, grabbed his pants, and too quickly wanted to get back to working upstairs at the bar. The restaurant was packed with reservations. Tyra stood there alone after he left her to attend to the paying customers.

She shouldn’t have let him use her as a vehicle. She had feelings for him, wanted to be his girlfriend, but she was only a quick release. Tyra played it off like it didn’t really matter. For a long time, she’d wanted to have his cock inside of her. It was only held within her folds and wetness briefly. Tyra never shared with anyone, other than Lavin, that they had sex. It became something she was embarrassed about. Tyra knew the obvious, that Zach was sweet on Haylee and still is.

He never called out her name. Never spoke a word. Not even sounds of pleasure. She wanted to comfort him, let him know what she felt for him. That hadn’t played out.

When the deed was done, he pulled out and said, We need to get back on the floor before we are missed.

Not meeting his gaze, Tyra had searched the floor for her clothes. Self-disgust instantly weighed her down. She gave in so fast and let him in. Tyra should have worn a sign, come fuck me, I am available. Immediately after he left her in the wine cellar, she was certain it would never happen again. That quickie with Zach had not even been worth recounting with Lavin. She had no excitement afterwards to boast about. It was her choice to let him take her, and her mistake to deal with and try to someday forget.

However, sometimes for a brief, fleeting moment, she remembered when he had been buried deep inside of her. When that happened, she quickly pushed that bad memory away. A scowl crossed her face, like having a bad taste in her mouth, and she shook her head, wanting to rid herself of that thought immediately.

    CHAPTER ONE

    Arden’s New Season

Oftentimes, Tyra’s workmate was Zach or Alexis. Zach—who she was previously crushing on—was an extremely handsome, well-built guy, with thick, dark hair that any girl would love to run her fingers through. Except Tyra, that is, as she hoped to have him removed from her thoughts. Alexis … well, she was perfection. Her hair last season was long, dirty blonde, and loosely flipped at the ends. This year she was sporting a shorter style like Tyra’s.

Maybe I am rubbing off on her. In her own humorous way, she thought to herself, Hell, everyone can’t be like Tyra Shaw.

Tyra wouldn’t want her issues, though. She seemed stressed; it was apparent that something was wearing her down. Too many dark circles were appearing under her eyes when she arrived for the start of her shift, not after finishing one. Maybe her divorce to a much older man that took forever to finalize still had unresolved issues, as now that it was done, Alexis flaked and didn’t show for her shifts for a day or two. Tyra knew that the new manager, Heath Harrison, was taking this in stride with her; if it were others, they would be gone. Tyra thought one day she would push the management far enough to get rid of her. There were many other girls waiting for a call for employment there with Arden’s. However, when Alexis was present for her shifts, she’s an asset. The customers loved her, and Tyra enjoyed working with her because she was so kind and helpful to her. Then again, it was long hours for her to pick up when Alexis did miss her occasional shifts and they were scrambling to cover them. I guess making money is not important for her survival, Tyra thought. After her divorce, she was said to have had a nice settlement that kept her in a very large apartment in town. Hell, Tyra’s studio apartment would probably only fill one of her rooms.

Tyra hoped she stepped it up this season as Arden’s needed all hands on during their busiest months. She was surprised that they hadn’t let her go but figured when she worked all of the hours she should, that she was favored by the repeat patrons so that mattered a lot to the ownership.

One thing Tyra noticed, though, was that she’s always looking around at the cliental, and she wondered if Alexis’s on the prowl for a new husband. Tyra, what do you think of the man with the green polo? What about the guy standing at the end of the bar with the striped shirt? Any of them your type? she asked, pulling me from my musings.

Actually, Alexis, I have given up on finding love or it ever heading in my direction. I will admit that they are both handsome, but their eyes are pointing in your direction … not mine. Besides, I have enough tending the bar to keep me busy.

One day a man will walk in to your life and you won’t be able to resist him, she sweetly stated.

Hanging the wine glasses upside down on the rack that reached over the bar, Tyra almost shattered a few not paying attention to lining them up in the wooden row as she felt Zach come up behind her. He still got her flustered.

Alexis, you amuse me with your positivity. Thank you for remaining hopeful for me and my happiness where I so lack.

Tyra turned from the bar to give Zach access to dump a large amount of ice. She saw him smile, but noted that it was not intended for her. His eyes locked with Alexis’s. I can’t win. Zach was the head bartender. A great one at that. He had clear blue eyes, and a well-kept beard. He’s extremely smart and not like other men. He seemed dangerous, but that’s probably only where she is concerned. The exact reason she’s still thinking about him escaped her.

Tyra thought she’d pushed all of that far from her head after last season, but unfortunately, it’s still there. Reminding herself that many times she watched Zach jump
