About this ebook

Tying a single strand of holiday lights to their interlocked hands,
Cary and Jesse made their commitment to one another.
“I love you, Cary, and I want you to be my first and my last. Promise me, baby.”
“I love you, too, Jesse. I promise, you will be the only one for me.”
As they made their vows, their hopes were that one day they would be able to afford a big holiday tree with many strands of lights, each one signifying another year they’d been together.

Professing their young love, they believed nothing could separate them ... that is
until Cary’s father takes a new job in Lanesboro, Minnesota,
which is a far distance from Monroe, New York when they don’t have the means
to fly to see one another.

Will they survive time apart that adds up month after month?

If they can believe the words ‘let love take you there,’
then maybe their hearts will find a way to one another once more.

    CHAPTER ONE

Cary pounded her alarm clock with the side of her fist to silence it, successfully knocking it off of her bedside table with the final blow. After a few minutes, she shuffled out of her bed, pulling her nightshirt down; it was an oversized, faded pink tee shirt that she had worn to bed. Still blissfully dreaming in her head, her feet moved forward. Cary, who was not a morning person, tried to remain dreaming of the first time she was going to have sex with Jesse and didn’t want that to end in her mind or body. Her heart was racing fast as she was only at the pinnacle of her climax when her stupid alarm went off.

Jesse was everything to her that life lacked. He was not only very handsome, but his inside character was incredible and so caring toward her. They were nearly the same height; five foot nine inches at best. His hair was dirty blond with a messy look, and hers was a simple straight style a shade lighter blonde than his. He had adorable deep blue eyes, and hers were again a lighter shade of his. Together they shouted cuteness as a couple. He was the reason she awoke each morning to a new day … to a new moment to see him once again, that’s all she needed. Jesse was the one person who understood her, and she swore to her future self that they were going to get married someday come what may. From the day he entered her school—Monroe High School—a few years back, she had eyes for him. Little did she know that Jesse was also love-struck by her. It took a while, but he finally asked her out. It seemed like forever to her for him to make that move. Originally, she was uncertain if he was interested in her, but the problem was Jesse was simply adjusting to a new school—mid-year entrance and he knew no one. About a year ago he finally asked her out, and they became an inseparable pair. This year had passed like it was a minute. Although they were both from very humble backgrounds, they had fun with the little they had. Jesse, ever the adventurous one, would scout for locations where they could spend time together alone. He would get cheap red wine and pizza for their date, and any time together was special as it didn’t matter where they were even if sitting together curbside watching the cars roll down the road.

Cary got herself moving this new day, and a secretive smile came upon her face. Tonight was the night they were going to have sex for the first time, and perhaps the dream was a sign that it was going to be beyond amazing. They had both agreed to wait for this long. She eased off her panties and jumped in the bath. As the water trickled down her body, her nipples hardened, images of the dream she had flooding her mind. She planned to look her best tonight. She already had a mental image of how she wanted to look. Cary was pleased that she’d been able to buy a matching underwear and bra set at an inexpensive local store. She couldn’t wait to wear them for Jesse.

Jesse took the long route to Cary’s house. He wanted to spend time thinking and imagining how the night was going to end. He couldn’t afford to buy flowers, so he had walked into the fields, picking out colorful wild flowers for Cary. She meant the world to him, and was the reason why he was beyond motivated to make a better life and succeed in leaving this town that was losing employment every day … and more so losing hope. While he navigated the streets leading up to her house, he smiled to himself as he imagined the way they had first met. Although at first, he was miserable with moving in with his grandpa and quickly became distant and depressed, but that all went away after first meeting Cary. She was what got him more than interested in living in the new town. Jesse always questioned what young person would like to leave the city to move to a small town like Monroe? He had all of his hopes and dreams there, his friends, his comfort zone. It was not a choice—his parents took on hard times and sent him off to his grandpa’s to be raised, fed, schooled, and have a life. Cary, though, was the game changer for him. Now he didn’t want to be anywhere besides Monroe. He didn’t look back to where he had come from, nor to the parents who couldn’t find a way to keep him with them. The love from his grandpa would be plenty as it was a roof over his head, food in his belly, and an encouraging mentor with conversations they shared.

Reaching the front porch of Cary’s house, he took a deep breath before knocking gently on the door. He had barely finished the second knock when the door swung open. Jesse was speechless.

    Hey there, Cary said excitedly.

Jesse just stood there still dumbfounded, soaking up the beauty before him. He had never seen her made up, as Cary never wore any makeup. Tonight, she was all dolled up and she looked more beautiful than ever.

Hellooooo, she said again, waving her hands in his face.

Oh, I’m sorry, baby. You just look so beautiful. All I can say is wow! Wow! Wow!

Cary was visibly blushing now and looked at the ground as she grinned from ear to ear. Thank you, she managed to respond. And you look amazing, too. I have never seen you all dressed up like this. Cary smiled happily as she smoothed out the wrinkles in her cotton dress. Jesse was wearing a crisp white shirt and his needed a pressing, so she was not embarrassed that hers did as well. They need not be perfect on the outside to one another. They were indeed beyond perfection in one another’s hearts.

She didn’t mind it wasn’t ironed because hopefully in a few hours from now it would be coming off. It was a sleeveless dress, white with a faded blue floral print. The other day Cary scored by finding this nice dress at a second-hand store. She didn’t care who owned it before, all she knew was it fit great and was priced perfect for the few dollars she had saved. She wanted to dress up fancy for Jesse this one time.

Thank you, thank you, Jesse answered. Oh, and I got you these. Jesse revealed the flowers he had picked earlier in the day and handed them to her.

Awwwwww, they’re so beautiful. Thank you, Jesse. I love the colors! Cary exclaimed. She loved his thoughtfulness in getting her flowers and showering her with compliments. Kind words were priceless and so uplifting.

They’re not as beautiful or as colorful as you look tonight. Jesse smiled.

You’re going to melt my heart with all of these compliments tonight, aren’t you? Cary playfully pushed him on the chest with her index finger.

It always tickled him when she did that, and he moved back before she could continue. He loved her touch, even the slightest as it connected him to her. He needed to not get all excited yet … the night was just beginning.

We better get going. I can’t wait to see what else you have planned tonight. Let me drop these flowers in some water and we can leave, Cary said, then quickly disappeared toward the kitchen.

Jesse had promised her he’d make this evening a memorable one for her, and he had done everything to try and make it a special one. He’d deprived himself of many simple luxuries so he could afford an inexpensive, clean hotel and dining at a nicer restaurant at least. He knew she was going to be surprised.

Tell me where we’re going, please? I’m so anxious, Cary said when she couldn’t hold it anymore. They had walked a few blocks holding hands until they arrived at the bus station, where they were now waiting for the next bus. It was to arrive in just a few minutes.

Jesse laughed. If I tell you, then it’s no longer a surprise.

"Oh, come on, please. Okay, let me try and guess then. Should I?" she asked.

You can be my guest if you want to try, but don’t think I’ll be telling you even if you guess correctly. Grinning, Jesse shook his head.

You’re such a mean ass, she joked, pretending to be frowning.

Finally, the bus arrived and they both got on. They remained with their hands locked together the entire bus ride.
