Olivia stepped off the smelly yellow school bus and breathed in the fresh spring air. That first step off the bus always smelled of freedom.
She slung her blue backpack over one shoulder and zipped the bottom of her favorite pink sweatshirt.
She had some time before her stepdad expected her home, but she had nowhere to go.
Normally, she would’ve headed home with her best friend Emma. But Emma and her family had moved away.
Two days before, Olivia had hugged her best friend - her only friend in her neighborhood - goodbye. She and Emma had been best friends since the second grade. The last three years, they had been in every class together.
Olivia had watched as the movers packed the monstrous white truck full of all of Emma’s family’s possessions. She hugged Emma as they both cried buckets of tears, and then watched as the truck and Emma’s father’s SUV drove away. Olivia felt like a piece of her had gone with them and was now lost out in the ether somewhere between here and Emma’s new home.
Olivia didn’t want to go home until her mother got off work because the last thing she wanted was to be alone with her stepdad. Her mom had met him online a long time ago, but she had only met in person a few months ago. They got married shortly after that. Olivia didn’t know him very well, so she wanted to wait until her mom was there, just to be a buffer between them. It was too awkward to be alone with him because
