Chapter 1

Early one Sunday morning, Olivia awoke to the sound of birds chirping outside her window. She pulled back her pink and yellow comforter and went to the window.

Olivia gazed at the backyard, amazed at the number of blue birds flying into the trees. One of the birds swooped down from a branch, and landed on her windowsill.

Olivia blinked at the cute little bird, saying, hi, there!

The bird cocked her head side to side. Hello there! How are you early this morning?

I’m fine, thank you.

Olivia’s Aunt Liz entered the room. What are you doing? You’re supposed to be getting ready for church! Olivia gazed at her aunt’s large mole on the side of her nose. Sorry auntie, I was just talking to the birdie in the window.

Aunt Liz placed her hand on her hip. Birds can’t talk, and there’s no bird in the window.

She’s right there! Olivia spun around and pointed, but no bird was there. Auntie, I swear!

Don’t you swear! Put on your red ruffle dress and black Mary Jane’s. Hurry up; first service starts in 45 minutes.

Olivia removed her blue pajamas and put on the clothed her Aunt Liz had instructed her to, although she rather would have worn a sunny yellow dress with matching shoes.

My mother would have let me wear what I wanted to, Olivia said to herself.

Twenty minutes later, Olivia was in church with her aunt, singing songs of praise. Her mind was still
