Easy Money Origami Ebook - Marc Kirschenbaum

    Introduction

Sometime in the 1950s, magicians started incorporating origami into their acts. The better performers liked to use familiar props, and folding money was something their audience could relate to. The tradition of money folding continues to this day, and is one of the most popular forms of origami. Unlike regular origami that is typically folded from squares of ambiguous size, using bills makes obvious the size of the paper you started with. Sometimes even the location of the markings can give clues about how a model was formed.

Using money for folding presents some unique challenges. All of those engraving patterns and scrollwork can make seeing your folds a bit tricky. The small size and thickness of your bill makes many-layered models tough to manage. And folded flaps tend to relax and spread apart after a short period of time.

Adding a little bit of water can help give some permanency to your careful work. Bind your model with masking tape and twist ties. Then, lightly dampen the folded bill with a spray bottle. Once dry, remove the bindings. The stiffened form will be quite resilient.

An advantage to using money as a folding medium lies in its unique dimensions. Equilateral triangles fit nicely within the boundaries of a bill. Folds based on multiples of 22.5-degree angles also work well. Money can even divide nicely into 3 x 7 squares. All of these geometries are used for the models in this book.

Every effort was made to make the 15 included models to be as easy to fold as possible. Most of the folds are simple to intermediate level in difficulty, but folding on such a small scale will take some getting used to. There is a wide variety of subjects tackled, from geometric pieces to animals, so you are sure to find something of interest to try. The projects are arranged in approximate order of difficulty, so you can work your way up to the more sophisticated pieces.
