The idea for this sculpture came from several sources – Renaissance images of the Madonna, the artist Modigliani and other contemporary references – making it something of an amalgamation of ideas that are stylised during the making.

Yours can be even more stylised than this one if you want – it could have a long neck as depicted in Modigliani’s women, short hair, no hair, piercings, anything at all, the choice is yours.

Gather your own imagery to reference as you work. Maybe do some preliminary sketches to get an idea of form and size – this is always useful.

Form a good block of clay into a rough coil between both hands, then roll it on the work surface to an even 3-4cm thickness.
