This is one of the better-written books on bad breath. It is lucid, the facts well presented and as a dentist, I praise Dr Goiton for his thorough research even though this is not his core area of medical knowledge. I will unreservedly recommend this book to my colleagues and to patients who need more information about halitosis

PREFACE

A while back, while doing an internship on the last year of medical school, I was faced with a problem that forced me to undertake a long and tiresome research of the medical literature that gave birth to this book. Having never had any problem of that type before, I was startled to notice that my breath was developing an offensive odor that just would not improve with any form of oral hygiene practice. I, of course, decided to visit a dentist. However, despite undergoing close to half a dozen procedures (mostly professional dental cleaning), the problem wouldn’t just go away. I was surprised of how shallow the understanding of most dentists is regarding the disorder of bad breath and being on the brink of finalizing my studies and earning a doctoral degree in medicine, I was also well aware that most medical students have never received any in-depth lecture on that issue as well.

Being desperate for solution, I started to do what I was trained not to do in medical school - visiting Dr. Google for a quick fix. Hence, I decided to quit searching for quick-fix ideas and took matters to my hands. I set out to review all the available medical literature from various medical text books and journals and began to formulate a systematically designed text that is inclusive only of information that has been PROVEN IN MEDICAL RESEARCH AND PUBLISHED IN RECOGNIZED MEDICAL TEXTBOOKS AND JOUNALS. Initially, the aim was collect information that will help me overcome my own problem and to produce a literature review (systematic review) on the topic and publish it in a medical journal. (Being aware of the scarcity of comprehensive facts only texts on the topic of bad breath that are available for medical students and practitioners, I was
