About this ebook

Dangerous creatures roam the night, looking for easy prey. It's Violet's duty to hunt them down.

Violet is a sorcerer, a huntress, and a vampire who works for a secret organization ruled by the Eylones—powerful immortal sorcerers—that defend humans from the monsters that lurk in the shadows.

Long-time ago, she was saved from certain death by her sexy Eylone commander who taught her how to fight and use the magic in her blood. The deadly combination of these two skills makes her one of the most powerful enchantresses roaming the streets after dark. Violet is a unique and powerful weapon against the monsters that hunt humans.

When new dangerous creatures stalk and kill innocent young women, Violet needs to go undercover and face the one who stole her from her parents and turned her into a vampire.
Seducing and destroying Ewan has been what kept Violet alive for so long, but confronting old feelings might not be as easy as she assumes. Especially when her commander reveals his true feelings for her and she can't take her hands off him.

Violet will need to decide if she wants to go back to her old ways or find her rightful place among the Eylones she descended from while doing all she can to find the King of Vampires who wants to enslave the world.

    About the Author

    Chapter One

THIS WASN’T THE FIRST time I hunted a cold, perverted murderer. I’d had my fair share of those since I became a huntress for the Guardians. Yet that night, I was running late. My new university crush, Ben, was taking me to a party at his frat house. I had to take care of business fast, but the vampire I was pursuing liked crowded places.

Looking at the window display, I put my hands inside the pockets of my leather jacket and pretended to be interested in the computer for sale while I focused my enhanced hearing on his movements. He entered a deli, and I waited before checking what he was doing. We weren’t far from the spot of his last kill the previous night. There were plenty of poor people and women-of-the-night working those streets—easy prey. He liked to torture the women before killing and dismembering them. The spectacle was gruesome and showed how deranged this vampire was. He felt empowered and believed that no one could stop him. Well, his days of killing were over.

I walked past the deli and glanced inside. My target was pretending to drink coffee while checking out the waitress. Entering the alley to my left, I rested my back against the wall and waited. That could sum up my life for the last centuries: waiting.

Movement over my head warned me someone was approaching. I touched my chest and magically summoned my sword before swinging it toward whatever was coming.

Relax, Violet. A tall, dark-haired guy raised his hands and smirked as he sauntered down the alley.

Sucking a breath, I fought the urge to roll my eyes as I twisted my hand, and the sword disappeared. What are you doing here, Cyan?

The boss sent me to see if you needed back up, he replied, putting his hands inside the pockets of his leather jacket. That was a neat trick.

I folded my arms and looked at the dirty brick wall in front of me. What was a neat trick?

What you did with your sword. Though swords are old-fashioned. You should buy a Glock. It’s easier to carry around.

    I’m a sorceress. I don’t need to carry a gun. I’m the gun.

Point taken. He looked around. So, where’s our target?

    How did you find me?

He grinned. Tracking device. We all have one. Remember?

Only high ranks have access to that.

    The boss sent me.

Straightening up, I fixed my leather jacket. The boss knows that I like to work alone. It’s quieter that way.

    Where are you going?

Walking to the deli, I stopped in front of the door and muttered to my unsolicited partner, Grab a coffee. Do you want one?

Apparently, Cyan believed it was an invite because he followed me inside. The vampire looked at us when we entered, checked me out, but paid no further attention the moment we sat at a table and ordered coffee. I guessed that a couple looked less suspicious.

Spreading his legs, Cyan occupied his side of the table. Do you want to see a movie after this?

I have a date after this.

The waitress arrived and filled our mugs, leaving to grab a piece of pie for Cyan. She arrived fast enough and left the plate in front of him.

Cyan pulled the plate toward him and sliced the pie with an eager look. Still dating humans?

I drank my coffee. That’s none of your business.

Do you want some? he asked, pointing the fork at the pastry.

No, I’m good. I warmed my hands against the mug. Why do you eat that? You don’t need it.

No one eats pie because they need it. They eat it because it tastes good. It was my favorite food when I was human. I might not need to eat this to survive, but it helps me blend in.

I scrunched my nose at the food. I couldn’t handle anything else but liquid in my stomach.

Once you become one of them, you’ll need to eat food.

A shiver ran up my back with the idea of eating solid food. I washed the bad taste in my mouth by gulping my coffee. Looking at my target, I watched him follow the young waitress’s movements. I could be mistaken, but it seemed the vampire had found his next target. We could be there all night if he was waiting for her shift to end and grab her.

    So, how are classes going?

I looked at Cyan with furrowed eyebrows. Fine. Why?

He shrugged. What are you studying this time?

A bit of everything, so I don’t get bored.

That’s nice. I once had an undercover assignment at a university. Not here, but upstate. Do you have a lot of work where you are?

Arching an eyebrow, I replied, Sometimes. But we mostly just give the newborn vampires the cure and send them home. Lowering my voice, I asked, Should we be talking about this here?

He smirked. Probably not. Though, I’m curious about why you’re in this part of the city. It isn’t your territory.

I folded my arms on the table. I asked for this.

    Cyan squinted.

I arched an eyebrow at him. What?

Nothing. I just think you look sexy when you are acting distant.

Resting my back in my seat, I rolled my eyes. Really? Do you honestly believe that pick up line will work on me?

Only if you want it to. He ate more pie after that dumb answer.

I got up. He’s on the move. Pay the bill, leave a nice tip to the waitress, and follow me.

Without waiting for him to protest or obey, I stormed out of the restaurant and continued to follow the vampire.

MY TARGET WAS IN THE mood to promenade. Still, I needed to catch him red-handed so that I could rid the world of his presence. This night, he seemed to be picky about choosing a victim.

Shortly after midnight, he entered what looked like an abandoned building and disappeared inside. Waiting across the street, I remained in the shadows.

Cyan stood guard by my side. What do you think he’s doing in there? It seems like an abandoned building. Maybe it’s where he kills and dismembers his victims. We might have to go inside and make sure he isn’t holding anyone prisoner.

I clenched my teeth. Please, stay quiet.

The difference between hunting with my partner and Cyan was that sorcerers shared a telepathic link. We could communicate without using our voice. Also, Galvin didn’t engage in boring conversations and assumptions.

    We should go inside.

My hand flew to his chest, stopping him from moving. We wait and observe for now.

A few more minutes and nothing happened. Then, the sound of a vehicle made us retreat farther into the darkness. A car parked in front of the building, and two guys exited it. One of them opened the back door and pulled out a human female. She was blindfolded, and her hands were tied behind her back. Grabbing her arms, both men dragged her as she whimpered.

Did you know he worked with others? Cyan questioned.

I had no idea. The cameras showed him working alone. These men smell human.

We have a reason to go inside now. Cyan grabbed his two semi-automatic pistols.

Wait for the light to turn on, I instructed as I summoned my sword and focused my telepathic abilities on the victim.

For a few moments, I felt her fear and heard the heavy breathing of her kidnappers. Then a barrier blocked me out and forced me back into my body. Snapping my eyes open, I stumbled back as I caught my breath.

    Are you okay? Cyan questioned.

My eyes were on the windows of the building. One light turned on on the second floor. Cyan, be careful. We might be dealing with something more than sadistic men and vampires.

I’m always careful. Follow behind. I’ll clear the path. Cyan took the lead like the excellent foot soldier that he was. He could take a direct hit if needed.

I ran after him as we used our speed to cross the street and venture into the unknown. Breaking the doorknob, Cyan pushed the door back. We entered the dusty hall of the abandoned apartment building.

Upstairs, I instructed, seeing the wooden staircase in front of us.

They aren’t expecting company. No one is guarding this floor.

Something doesn’t feel right, I said as I rushed up the stairs behind Cyan.

Which door? he asked, studying the long corridor with several closed doors.

Looking at the floor, I noticed the footprints in the dust. The trail led to the first door on our right. Cyan must have concluded the same because, like a bulldozer, he crashed into the wall next to the door and began shooting.

The factor of surprise was gone. I aimed my hand at the door, exploding it into tiny pieces and witnessing the commotion. There were three men and a woman in a white, silky dress with long, dark hair. A female was laid on a table, seemingly paralyzed. The woman dressed in white had her mouth wide open, more than humanly possible, and a tentacle was recoiling from inside the victim’s mouth and into the woman’s mouth.

    Cyan’s shots were deafening.

Black widow! I shouted, instinctively ducking from the fireball that the creature threw at me.

Rolling on the floor, I saw the two dead males that Cyan had killed. He was exchanging fire with the vampire. Kneeling, I threw a spiral of light at the vampire who burst into flames. After, I used my kinetic powers to throw furniture across the room against the black widow.

Reload and aim at her, I shouted at Cyan, who had stopped firing and was gawking at the deadly creature.

What the hell was she doing to the girl? he asked.

The creature kept evading my attacks while shrieking with her large mouth, showing a bunch of little, sharp teeth. Black widows were an evolution of vampires. On the outside, they looked like beautiful women, but when they were transformed, they were deadly predators with enhanced climbing skills and powerful telekinetic abilities.

Shoot her, I ordered Cyan and used my telepathic abilities to warn Galvin.

Cyan aimed his guns and opened fire. The black widow retracted her limbs as if she were a spider and climbed the wall as she dodged every bullet that cracked into the wall.

Shit, she’s possessed! Cyan groaned and reloaded his gun.

Waving my left hand, I pushed the victim on the table to safety. With my other hand, I threw a fireball at the creature in the corner. Piercing my ears with her shriek, she stopped the fireball and disappeared into a swirling portal that allowed her to escape.

Damn! How did she do that? Can she create portals like the sorcerers? What the hell was that? Why was she sticking her tongue into that girl’s esophagus?

I fisted my hands, ignoring Cyan’s hysterical reaction. We read this all wrong. They weren’t dismembering girls for pleasure. The black widow was using them as hosts, and the creatures would claw their way out of the women’s bellies once they fed and grew bigger.

Black widows’ babies? Cyan asked, rubbing the back of his neck and wrinkling his nose at the thought. We need to call the boss.

He already knows. They are coming, I informed. Looking behind, I watched as a new portal opened and stirred the dirt on the floor. We need to make sure that the girl isn’t infected.

He won’t be happy that we let the black widow escape.

I clenched my teeth and watched as Galvin stepped into the room with an armed team behind him. His face was grave when his gaze detected my presence in the room. Walking to me, I braced myself for the interrogation.

It’s going to be a long night, I sighed, folding my arms.

    Chapter Two

I ENTERED GALVIN’S office and sat on the chair. Narrowing my eyes, I confronted my superior. "Why did you send Cyan yesterday to
