Visette’s mother, Annie Mae Edgewater, added boiling water to the beautiful, clear bowl. Several candles lined the circle, six of them remaining unlit. All completed a circle. Bottles full of oils and smaller bowls were meticulously placed around the larger bowl like the ingredients of a recipe for a television show. How ironic that felt to Visette.

One at a time, Annie Mae picked up four bottles. She added a few drops of essential oils from each into the steaming water in the largest bowl. The scent of lime, basil, bergamot, and lavender filled the room. As she added the second round of boiling water, the steam began to swirl in front of the candlelight.

Visette gathered lavender petals from a bag in her pocket as stood ready to do her part in the ceremony.

She chanted, taking a flame from a single white candle to each of the remaining six candles for each location as she went. I call upon the powers of the north and all the spiritual and elemental beings associated with the powers of the earth to protect the performance of this rite. Slowly she turned toward the next candle and lit it. I call upon the powers of the east and all the spiritual and elemental beings associated with the power of air to protect the performance of this rite. I call upon the powers of the south and all the spiritual and elemental beings associated with the power of fire to protect the performance of this rite. I call upon the powers of the west and all the spiritual and elemental beings associated with the powers of water to protect the performance this rite. Now she moved to the center of the room, I call on the powers of the great space above and all the spiritual and elemental beings associated with the spirit to protect the performance this rite … I call upon the powers of the vast below and all the spiritual and elemental beings associated with the underworld to protect the performance of this rite. About us, below us, all around us, this sphere encloses us while we perform this magick rite.

After the candles were lit, Annie Mae continued, Divine Goddess and Gods, angels, elementals and spirit guides, I thank you for the beautiful energy of white love and healing that you shine upon us. I ask for your help in releasing all that does not have our highest good in mind. I ask that you help guide us with cleansing this space so that only beings of light and love may enter here. I ask to receive a beautiful healing white light of protection and blessings as we look into the past. Protect me and mine from any harm. Allow not our thoughts to escape this circle nor allow anyone else’s to enter. For this, I give my heartfelt thanks. Annie Mae waved her hands through the mist that now seemed to explode from the bowl, causing it to swirl like a tornado in the air.

Still within the magical circle, Visette and Tom watched from behind Annie Mae as her jet-black hair took on a light blue glow. As the steam from the bowl formed images, Visette drew in closer to see them.

In this night … with all our might … give us vision … give us sight … In the light of the moon … within the circle of four … come to us power to open the door … between this realm and the one we cannot see … harm no one and mote it be. Annie Mae repeated the chant three times before she closed her eyes and let the power grow within her. A powerful light emanated from her and filled the room.
