Chapter 1
When I was in 5th grade, I was placed in a 504 plan by my school with the involvement of my parents, teachers, and school counselor. A 504 plan is a federal law that gives children with disabilities the same opportunities in the public school system as those without. It can provide accommodations, different types of therapies like speech, physical, or occupational therapy, and other modifications to help children with disabilities succeed in school. My parents were instrumental in getting me into a 504 plan. As you may recall, I got better in school after the 504 plan was initiated. When I was in the 5th and 6th grade, I became comfortable with having one class and focusing on my assignments.
Then my world flipped upside down when I started 7th grade because I had to switch classes for each subject and report to homeroom. Things are way different in middle school. How overwhelming! I have a locker to store my books and folders instead of keeping everything in one desk. I go to my locker in between classes but sometimes grab the wrong books for class. I almost got detention for being late to math class because I had my science folder and books instead of the math ones!
I worry about being late for class because it takes me too long to figure out what books I need for which class. I was so used to the pace of 5th and 6th grade. I don’t do well with change and transitions. I’m so used to everything being a certain way, so when change happens, I get anxious and overwhelmed.
Each classroom has its own set of challenges too. There are so many distractions in each class. There are different students in each class also, and I have a hard time trying to keep track of who is in what class. It’s hard for me to make friends.
And because I have a different teacher for almost every subject, I have a
