Motorcycle Dual Sporting (Vol. 5) Dual Sporting Pennsylvania And Beyond Compilation includes -

Dual Sporting Pennsylvania
The following five previously published magazine articles from Backroad Bob's Motorcycle Adventures Dual Sporting Pennsylvania begin with five stories compiled after fifteen years, dozens of long weekends, and tens of thousands of miles riding through Pennsylvania's state forests. The 2.1 million acres of Pennsylvania's state forests and their 2600 miles of unpaved roads and 2500 miles of single track trails constitute one of the largest state-owned public areas open to dual sport riding in the United States. By permitting public access to the state's forests, Pennsylvania has created a dual sport rider's paradise. It's difficult to improve on a day spent riding hard, eating well, and sitting around a campfire under a sky so filled with stars that constellations are lost in an expanse of twinkling lights stretching from horizon to horizon.

Dual Sporting Beyond Pennsylvania
The remaining twenty articles are a compilation of stories about events from the AMA/Suzuki National Dual Sport Trail Ride Series, Racer Productions' Appalachian Dual Sport Tour, and routes I've developed after fifteen years of East Coast dual sport exploration. A few articles cover the same event, the Shenandoah 500km, and rightfully so as this is the best dual sport ride in the country. The folks from Northern Virginia Trail Riders could write the book on organizing a ride. A few others concern the demise of the most famous off-road event in America - the Blackwater 100 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Race. Two decades ago, with more than a little help from legendary promoter Dave Coombs, the Blackwater 100 became known as the toughest race in America. This reputation put Dave's Racer Productions and his fledgling GNCC series on the map. Today, the GNCC title is the most coveted off-road crown in America. One of the articles is an interview with Sidney Dickson - a former World Rally car driver, Vincent collector, and dual sporting pioneer. His insights into long distance, endurance, dual sport riding will really get you thinking about your own dual sport adventure.

    Foreword to Backroad Bob’s

    Dual Sporting Pennsylvania & Beyond

By 1990, I had ridden motorcycles through every state east of the Mississippi River, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and five Canadian provinces, but I wanted to do more. I wanted to explore the back roads across America, see the Isle of Man TT Races, examine everything that's foreign at a European Grand Prix, and experience the canopied forests, cascading streams, and towering mountains of Pennsylvania's state forests.

Over the past thirty-eight years I've done all this and taken thousands of photos of the places I've been and made millions of memories of the unforgettable people I've met. Along the way, I've recorded my experiences in hundreds of magazine articles, and traveled hundreds of thousands of miles by motorcycle in the pursuit of my dreams. If this sounds like something you'd like to do, then these articles are a valuable tool to assist you in fulfilling your dreams too.

The resulting articles have appeared in American Road Racing, Backroads, Blue Ribbon Coalition Magazine, CC Motorcycle News, Cycle News, Motorcyclist, PowerTech Quarterly, Rider, RoadBike, Sport Touring News, STAReview, Thumper News, Thunder Press, Turbo News, Trail Rider, Twistgrip, Winding Road Motorcycle Times, and the book Turbocharging, Supercharging, and Nitrous Oxide.

These articles are the fruits of a trial and error tree planted decades ago. The bad roads, the dead end trails, and the nasty places have been left out. What remains is a four-decade distillation of motorcycling in 38 American states, five Canadian provinces, five national forests, ten Pennsylvania state forests, and eight foreign countries. These articles contain valuable information that will save you time and money and enable you to efficiently plan your own adventures while avoiding the mistakes I've made. Let each article be a preview of your own adventures. - BRB

    Acknowledgments

I’d like to thank everyone that ever rode with me, invited me on a ride, gave me an idea for a ride, helped me when I’ve been stranded alongside a road or trail, or struck up a conversation with me when I’ve been on the road or the trail. There are thousands of you, but the ones I remember the most are: Joe, Robert, Paul, Ron, Barry, Bob, Tom, Sydney, Stewart, Sam, Oop, Moose, Rock, Randy, Mark, Gary, George, Allen, Steve, and Dad - great riders all. The editors that thought I had something to contribute deserve a tip of the hat too.

I’d also like to thank everyone that ever fought for this great country. You have done, and are doing, a job that many Americans don’t have the nerve or the will to do. We should all be thankful for your sacrifices. I’ve had the good fortune to travel outside the United States and I’ve enjoyed immensely the foreign places I’ve been, people I’ve met, and things I’ve done, but there is no better feeling than returning to the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Spending weeks on the road or days on the trail can be surprisingly isolating, but I’ve managed to make hundreds of new friends along the way. Get out there and make a few new friends of your own. - BRB

    Introduction to Backroad Bob’s

    Dual Sporting Pennsylvania And Beyond

The following twenty-five published magazine articles from the Dual Sporting Pennsylvania and Dual Sporting Beyond Pennsylvania CDs begin with five stories compiled after fifteen years, dozens of long weekends, and tens of thousands of miles riding through Pennsylvania’s state forests. The 2.1 million acres of Pennsylvania’s state forests and their 2600 miles of unpaved roads and 2500 miles of single track trails constitute one of the largest state-owned public areas open to dual sport riding in the United States. Instrumental in the formation of these forests was America’s first conservationist and first USDA Forest Service chief, Gifford Pinchot, who served as Pennsylvania’s governor in 1922 and 1930. He developed the state forest system to protect Pennsylvania’s watersheds that had been ravaged by decades of uncontrolled timbering, mining, and fires.

The CD dual sport routes are 100-200 mile loops with midday lunch and gas stops.  They fall within the area of north central Pennsylvania known as Big Woods Country where seven state forests join to form over 1.5 million contiguous acres of public lands. A decade of exploration, trial, and error has gone into creating ten full days of riding with only enough pavement to take you to and from civilization where you can fill your growling stomach with home cooking at a remote roadhouse and where you can fill your echoing tank with fuel at one of the few gas stations in the area.

State forest maps, the Northcentral Mountains Discovery Map, and state park camping information are available from Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) at  and tourist information can be found at . The Pennsylvania Trail Riders Association (PaTRA) is a riders advocacy club that works with the DCNR to open additional riding areas, maintains the Shade Mountain riding area, and is responsible for the only (the others are ATV-only areas) state approved off-road motorcycle riding area in the state. It’s located in Bald Eagle State Forest. There’s no reason
