    Silver snuck through the quiet darkened tunnels of the weyr. Nearly all the other dragons were sleeping as she padded silently past, her tail raised so as to not create a dragging noise.

    She sensed the elders were still awake, at their council fire. Talking late into the night about important matters. Silver loved to listen to them and often crept in, sitting and trying to understand the conversation.

    She didn’t like being with the other hatchlings. They always hurt her. With their words or bodies. They called her weak and stupid. She was always among the slowest flyers. And on the ground, she got distracted by small things like insects and flowers, while they wanted to play rough games. Silver sensed the dislike many of the other hatchlings bore her.

    She preferred the company of the elders to anyone else in the weyr. To sit and listen to them and think deeply upon their conversations, even if she didn’t always understand them.

    The young were not invited to be in the elders’ chamber, but she was often overlooked being so small and sitting so quietly. She’d only been hatched in the early summer. Late for a dragon.

    And now the weather had turned. Not many days ago, she’d flown with all the other dragons to the Fall Equinox Celebration at the center of Faerie.
