Colonel Quentin James Abernathy (Ret.) poured tea into cups, and glanced at his guest from beneath bushy gray eyebrows.

Colonel Abernathy had retired from Her Majesty’s service many years ago.  His age was indeterminate, but, if the truth were known, the Colonel was well past ninety.  He had retired a bachelor to a stately London townhouse, and lived comfortably with his pension, and his family fortune.  He had several acquaintances from the club a few blocks away.  One of them was sitting in his study, preparing to enjoy tea on a rainy afternoon.
