    Colonel Quentin James Abernathy (Ret.) poured brandy into snifters, and glanced at his guest from beneath bushy gray eyebrows.

    Colonel Abernathy had retired from Her Majesty’s service many years ago.  His age was indeterminate, but, if the truth were known, the Colonel was well past ninety.  He had retired as a bachelor to a stately London townhouse, and lived comfortably with his pension, and his family fortune.  He had several acquaintances from the club a few blocks away.  One of those acquaintances was sitting with the Colonel in his study, and they were preparing to enjoy fine brandy after a hearty dinner on a rainy London night.

    Huffing into his large moustache, and speaking with his strong, gruff voice, Colonel Abernathy said, I say, Helmsley!  May I tell you the story of the Heart of Glass?

    Delighted to hear it, Colonel, replied Helmsley, settling into the comfortable arm chair and sipping his brandy.

    Excellent! exclaimed the Colonel.  How’s the brandy, sir?  Quite to your liking?

    Oh, yes, Colonel, thank you.

    Very good!  Well, on with the story.  Colonel Abernathy settled back.
