Introducing My Year of Rest and Relaxation
My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a novel by Otessa Moshfegh. It is a critically acclaimed work that tells the story of a lonely young woman’s desire to hibernate from the world in the hope of finding solutions to her existential problems.
The novel's narrator is a 26-year-old woman who lives alone in an apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side. She is a recent graduate of Columbia University and holds a job at an art gallery. She gets caught sleeping on the job one day and she decides that instead of making it up to the gallery owner or finding another job, she will spend the whole year sleeping in her apartment as a form of the rest cure. To do this, she finds a psychiatrist on the yellow pages and gets a prescription of sleeping pills, psychotropic drugs, and anti-anxiety drugs. She starts her year-long rest and relaxation but things happen. She gets visits from her best friend who mistreats her and gets her own dose of mistreatment. Her boyfriend who works at Wall Street comes by only when he wants to use her. She can well afford to rest the whole year—she survives on the inheritance she gets from her parents who are now dead, and she has unemployment benefits. Hoping to come out
