Author

Antonio Di Giovanni

Antonio Di Giovanni was born in Italy in June 1987 and grew up in a small village until at the age of 24, where then, he started to travel all over the globe, becoming a world citizen. He writes the travel blog LosInAsia to share beauties, adventures and info about Asia and to help future travelers. The idea came while he was traveling in Taiwan, where the love for that land became bigger and bigger, and so, an unexpected journey began: what should have been a 3-weeks vacation, turned into a gap year.

First of all, I do really thank you for buying How to survive a gap year in Asia and I'm glad you're considering this incredible experience that really is worth living. The book, inspired by real experiences, is a practical guide for travellers who wish to discover Asia travelling on budget. Intro

Asia is becoming a must-destination among backpackers, who increasingly, decide to stop longer beyond their expectations. And that is actually what happened to me. Even I've lived in different countries and travelled a lot, I realized that what I was doing it was just a place-change and not a life-change. So, I decided that short break from a regular-life, while I was in Taiwan, was no longer enough and what it supposed to be a 3-weeks vacation turned into a Gap Year.

I had a few thousand euros on my bank account, which probably would cover 2 months of expenses more or less, but that strong desire of living that adventure made me say I can do it, and I will. And so, without thinking too much, I made my decision.

Travelling for that long wasn't easy and after a few months I started to struggle with finances, but I didn't want to break that dream of wander-free because of the money. So, I called out all my skills and knowledge and I started to focus on how I would use them to survive. I was too stubborn to give up and probably too crazy to continue, I don't know, but finally, all my efforts paid off and I found out some ways to save a lot of money and, sometimes, to earn enough to top up my bank account to keep that journey alive. Let me remind you that I'm talking about surviving and pay daily basis expenses, and not talking about how to be a billionaire in Asia.

This experience made me stroll all over Asia discovering incredible cities that are eternally awake, where locals live in between the modern and the ancient of their culture and history. I tried a countless variety of delicious food that goes from Indian to Chinese taste. I jumped from and to islands that are comparable to heaven, swimming into crystal clear water and where the time seems to go slower while you lie on those beaches. I went hiking between green jungles and ancient sites that probably would see
