ABOUT THE AUTHOE
JEWISH FOOD HERO
Nourishing your mind, body, and spirit
INTRODUCTION
One week before Purim in 2012 there I was, living in rural Cambodia, the only Jewish person for miles, and desperately Googling to find a holiday menu that inspired me and was healthy for my family.
All the recipes I found made me feel like I was a Bubbe or Savta, and were not reflective of my or my daughter’s generation. I wondered if poor health and weight gain was the price to pay
for engagement in Jewish life. I knew that I wanted to celebrate more Jewish holidays than I already was, but I wasn’t confident I could do it on my own.
I dreamed about having a menu for every Jewish holiday that gave me the peace of mind and confidence for the healthy food I wanted to serve and the memories I wanted to create.
I never found the menu of my dreams—so I created my own instead.
The Jewish Food Hero Cookbook is my contributionto the Jewish community’s efforts to increase healthy food on our tables.
My goal is that together we can create a new and healthy food future for the Jewish people, one that is connected to our most beautiful traditions while being grounded in the present.
Even though this is a cookbook, it’s not just about the food and the final presentation. It’s also about how you feel leading up to the holiday, and the ambiance you want to create from day one of your preparation. It’s about your experience of the holiday itself and the memories you’ll inspire for your family and your children for generations to come.
Cooking healthy holiday meals can be a form of creative expression, self-care, and love.
I see a different food future for the Jewish people. I’m so glad you’re here and part of this vision.
To your health and inspiration,

HOW TO USE THIS COOKBOOK
This cookbook contains menus for the ten major Jewish holidays.
Inspiration for the Menus
Each holiday section begins with the background on my inspiration for the menu. I’ve shared a range of personal stories and memories that are meaningful to me, and will, I hope, be meaningful for you, too.
Energetic Themes
Then I share an energetic theme for you. Use this energetic theme however it feels good to you—thinking about what the theme means to you as you shop and prepare the food, writing in your journal about the topic, or using it as a conversation starter at your table. There’s no wrong way to do this.
Recipes and Ingredients
Each holiday menu includes one appetizer, a maindish, two side dishes, and a dessert. There is alwaysone recipe that can be prepared by children with adult supervision, indicated with an asterisk, and gluten-free options.
All the recipes in this cookbook use completely plant-based food (no animal products) and everyday kosher parve ingredients.
In a separate PDF that came with your cookbook purchase, you’ll find shopping lists for each of the holidays and dishes.
It’s the pairing of both traditional and modern, healthy food that will create the most satisfying, special celebration. For this reason, the recipes were created from our traditional and symbolic dishes for each particular holiday.
There are a few different ways you can use these menus:
• Cook the entire menu, from appetizer to dessert
• Pick a few dishes or ingredients to combine with your traditional holiday recipes
• Use one recipe from the menu to add to your holiday table Ready? Let’s get cooking.

ROSH HASHANAH
The Inspiration Behind This Menu
In 2013, Rosh Hashanah was an impromptu celebration—the group of people joining us for the meal came together effortlessly and naturally. There were four adults, myself and my husband included, and five children under seven years old.
This led to the realization that we’re celebrating and cooking for our children as much as we are cooking for ourselves. Children also have a role to play in the celebration, cooking, and meal; they must also findjoy at the table.
The father at that original Rosh Hashanah dinner was Moroccan, so I started playing with ingredients and recipes that had a Moroccan influence. I also began developing meals that would please children and adults, and tested them on my friends who joined me for Shabbat dinners.
This menu is simple with a Moroccan influence grounded in the sweetness (and reality) of celebrating holidays with children.
