The Me I Keep Secret - Jhane Ogu

    Revolution

I t was 1949, the year it all began...the Revolutionary War between Japan and Europe. But it wasn't your average 'man vs man' war, oh no...it was us European women, against the Japanese men. We were fighting for our rights, as women. You see, back then, us as women, we didn't have a lot of say-so in things that occurred. We had heard that in Japan, they didn't believe that women could be authorities...or that we could fight. They believed that we had to 'bow down' to men. That they were always in charge.

So what did you all do to resolve the issue, great-grandma? Misty, Ellen’s great-grand asked.

We heard the news, and my colleagues and I wanted war! There was a challenge presented, and the Japanese men accepted that challenge. We kicked their asses that day, and we took all the shots, bullets, bombs, and threats that you could name. We were not impressed at all by them...nor were we scared.

Did you all win?! Misty asked, her eyes full of excitement.

Ellen smiled, a proud smile at that, and said, Yes...yes we did, sweetie. It was me who threw the last grenade at them...and I showed them who was boss! They saw the aggressiveness that I brought, and  heard the authority in my voice...and you know what the leader of the Japanese troop did?

Misty got up, asking on a whisper, What?

Ellen placed her hand on Misty's shoulder, and said, "He took his hat off, and they all bowed down to us!"

"Wow, great-grandma. I want to make history like you did!"

Joy filled Ellen’s heart, hearing Misty say that, and she said, You will, sweetie. One day, you will.

    Addict

W hen did it all start ? Amy asked me, her eyes focused so strongly on me, I assumed she knew what color bra I was wearing.

Where can I start? Well...it all started with my uncle. He babysat me one night, alone, while my mother went out to find someone to toy with.

Toy with? she asked; all confused and shit.

Yes, that’s what she loved doing...that’s how I referred her one-night-stands. She would fuck one guy at a time, tell them all the same sweet stuff that she thought they wanted to hear, and once she got her nut she was done with whoever she was toying with, and it was always on to the next guy.

Oh ok, I see. So, your uncle...

    What about him?

    Was he your first?

My 'first'? I said sarcastically. Hmm...let me think.

Janelle, I know that what happened to you when you were only six years old is hard to talk about, especially with this being your first time expressing this traumatic event. Bu-

I cut her off, and said, "Look...I’ll explain to you what happened, but don’t start to pity me, ok? I’m not here to have a pity party. I’m here to get counseling. That’s what therapists or psychologists do, right? So please, just
